What's with that big plastic trip piece sitting on top of the phone? Why not have it on a hinge so it flips back and the mounting bracket itself has a lower profile?
I don't like crap in my field of view that I can't move to suit myself. The PIC related would have set out of the windshield view if it were not for that cap.

Because something at the front of the dashboard and standing tall is the right location for the passenger airbag to hit as it comes out. Due to the angle, the airbag explosion will throw the phone into the driver's face.
You can get a ticket for using mobile devices that have a data connection, while in a car on a public street.
So you can't use a phone for navigation, but you can use a dedicated gps device.

What's the point of that law anyways? Any and all interactive devices are distractions. If safety was an issue, a GPS wouldn't even work until the car came to a stop.
Well it's better than having a fucking tablet glued on top by default, i suppose.
