I've noticed a gap in my thinking. For whatever reason, I like the idea that levels and level caps exist in the Rance setting as real things rather than just gameplay elements, but I've drawing a blank as to what this actually contributes to the narrative. So I'm putting it to you guys, when has the series actually benefited from having levels be a thing, as opposed to doing something simpler and Shounen-like, such as just generic "power"?

Aside from better establishing the setting, it's been an important plot point in more than one occassion. The climax of 03 with Gele being a good example, and it's a pretty major thing in Quest and to a lesser extent in VI. It's also interesting for gameplay purposes.

Ive only played Kichikuou Rance and Sengoku. As of the end of IX does rance have a canon level or does it change each game?

his canonical level is quite literally anywhere between 1 and 9999.

He has no cap and gains levels really quickly but he loses them really quickly and slacks off like a professional slacker between games.

He starts IX at level 40, we don't know at what level he is at the end, I'd guess around 60-70. It'll porobably go down by the time X begins anyway.
