I'd made a Blood DK for leveling, however planned on going Unholy because apparently they're really good DPS and have an easy time getting into Mythic Raids. This is probably a stupid question, but I do want to go for the Unholy Artifact, right? I just wasn't sure if I was supposed to go for Blood for some other kind of meta reason or something.

I know a lot of top guilds(I'm a recruit in Easy as well as the only disc player) are coming up with strats specifically for the gold talent Barrier.

It's likely that during some bosses heavy AOE damage parts, disc priests can solo heal the entire thing while Barrier is up if it's viable for everyone to get in the barrier. Holy priests actually compliment disc well because they make it so we can spam PW:R for free for a couple seconds, which means we can get 20 Atonements up literally FOR FREE.

This spec is going to have a bad rep in Legion, because everyone that played braindead disc in WoD thinks it'll be similar now, but that's simply not the case. This is probably the hardest spec to play in PvE by a significant margin, so most disc priests are going to be awful and make others think the spec is ass.

As bad of a rep as it's getting and will get, it boggles my mind that people think this spec cant deal with mass AOE damage. This spec is probably the best spec in the game when it comes to dealing with burst AOE damage, and 4th when it comes to dealing with sustained AOE damage(behind MW monk, rdruid, and rshaman).

Imo in the healing roles within raid, disc ranks like this:

Healing to tanks: 2nd

Burst AOE healing: 1st

Sustained AOE healing: 4th(possible as high as 2nd, but wont know until raiding happens)

Not sure where they rank on single target spot healing, but it's probably somewhere in the middle.

DPS among healers: 1st. We definitely do outdps tanks by a significant amount, but will always be lower than real DPS classes.
