In a nutshell, I'm trying to put together a birthday present for my boyfriend who loves DotA 2 (and plays religiously). But I know nothing about the game.

What I do know is that I call him "panda" (for non-DotA reasons), and recently found out that his favourite hero is Pandaren (apparent coincidence).

Before finding this out, I had an idea to put together a panda-themed-box (a bunch of panda items that are references to things we have done together/spoken about/things he loves/whatever), and now that I know this I have to include something to do with this hero. Its too perfect not to.

This is where my knowledge ends, and I'm hoping you can help

Ideally, I'd get him something he can use in game. I've heard of getting couriers (I don't know if he already has one, or if that even matters - is more than one useful? How do I know if he will benefit from this? If it's useful, how do I gift one?).

I've tried to scope this out without success...

I created a new Steam account and asked him to add me, in the hopes that his profile might give me some insight into what he does/doesn't have. No dice. I couldn't ask in a convincing enough way, without a reason for him to add me. Lol. He said he would, (half-heartedly) and then I think he forgot. Asking him again would be too suss - it's not something I'd be passionate about without a suspicious reason. So I can't go down this route.

I even dedicated a whole day to watching the DotA Internationals with him last month, and asked him to explain stuff to me, in the hopes I could worm in some questions. But without the appropriate context to know what to ask, this was also an epic fail.

You're 2.5 years late for decent drops, 3.5 years if you wanted to make money out of them. Getting a set is extremely rare and even then, trade restrictions on drops are ridiculous
Go play CSGO, if you get a crate the same night it's released you'll get $8-10 easy and get a ´couple nice skins from that

What's the point of reducing drop rates if you can't sell your drops anyways (If I understand cosmetic mechanics correctly)?
