Use some cheats to get around its deficiencies in terms of balance and stats and it's a decent romp. The story is fairly uninteresting, characters are somewhat interesting, environments and atmosphere are good.

Pros: Lots of classes, races and backgrounds Different classes play differently Worldbuilding is pretty good Nice visuals and atmosphere (at least in the beginning sections and the expansions) Can cook food and have a pupper follow you
Cons: None of the classes are really exceptional because Josh Sawyer is autistic about balance Companions are pretty bland Story is rehashed from better Obsidian games Defiance Bay (the Baldur's Gate-like city) fucking sucks Your castle also sucks (the dungeon beneath it is pretty cool though) Some of the "fantasy" terms are unintentionally stupid (vampire is for nerds, it's FAMPYR now)

In Avellone's version of PoE, Durance and the Grieving Mother were supposed to be mutually responsible for their respective conditions. They would eventually realize it and try to either duke it out or let go of their animosity depending on how you treated them. Then they scrapped Avellone's ideas because they were too problematic for Josh's sensitive soul or something
