Well 2nd gen is nice (Untill facelift, after which they fucked up front lights which I find Disgusting.) Talking about interior well. My fist car was Škoda Felícia 2001 1.3 Litter that we Know from Favorit, and interior of that one suited me pretty well. I was also driving multiple different cars such as Opel Astra, Audi 80 B3 and an old Polo after those experiences I decided I don't wanna change much about the interior, so I decided to proceed to the "Higher class" Škoda car Octavia. For comparation I am posting interiors of Felicia and Octavia.

Sedan model is cheaper then the hatchback. Also the trunk adds lots of needed space which the hatch doesn't have.

I wish I had the hatchback sometimes for looks, but this is just a gas-saver daily commuter car so it doesn't really matter.

yep, the mode door actuator is what controls where the air goes. you have to take out the entire dashboard to get to it. I've owned 4 WJs and gotten to do that repair on 3 of them
