>thinking you can shift better than a modern computer controlled transmission
I seriously hope you guys don't do this
2016
computers can play chess and solve math problems better than me, too
It's not the shifting that makes autos shit, it's the power transfer.
You do realize that the transmission is mechanically different for autos and manuals right?
Not in the new semiautomatics popping up all over the place.
Numbers be damned, I'll do what I want. Go preorder a Tesla and beat off to Musk tweets.
He's probably referring to DCT automatics, not slushboxes.
>he thinks computers can outshift a sequential dogbox
On the upshifts, maybe. Certainly not in the downshifts - especially if the ECU isn't expecting it.
So you think a computer knows better than the driver who knows the conditions? Truly a womens transmissiom
yeah, i do.
have not driven a second hand econobox with an automatic transmission that wasnt squishy and confused as fuck by 1/3 throttle up a hill going 35mph.
>He's probably referring to DCT automatics, not slushboxes
Maybe, how many people here actually own a car with DCT though?
what happens to them?
i just bought my first automatic, it's 20 years old and seems fine
I do.
Nothing, they should drop back sequencially until it finds the right gear to go up the hill with the given throttle. Now if you dance around on the peddle, then it will confuse the auto because it can't figure out what gear it needs bases on the engine output.
The longer the hill, the more likely the transmission will down shift to get torque back to the wheels.
>T. Owned multiple autos never had a hill climb problem.
Except modern ones are much more advanced and rely on sensor data and machine learning algorithms...
Yeah look at hondus cvt, REALLY advanced
>buying new cars
>any year
kek he fell for it, i bet you have to have the latest phone and newest consoles too
mine has overdrive and two modes for slippery conditions and climbs (starts in 2nd and changes gear at a higher rpm) seems to work bretty good for old tech
We're not talking about CVT's, which are undeniably shit. This is about computer controlled transmissions as opposed to manual control.
My 2000 model year has it
I like my stick shift better for touge.
its called pneumatic sequantial manual, cuck
>cuck
Engineer, actually :^)
I just like the feeling of a long hard stick in my hand. Just the nob though.
>implying there is a difference
Lel, you have no idea how much retarded shit I see people on Veeky Forums doing to their cars.
>muh broscience
>semiautomatics
You're worse than the faggot who gets the automatic "cause wife can't drive stick"
engineers get their degree just for bragging rights (as shown by your first post), they are not actually good at doing practical things or thinking outside of the box, or at least the vast majority of them.
aren't you a special snowflake, sweetie
I do. It's fucking awesome too.
Pretty much a manual transmission for people that can't shift
How's the idling in traffic?
It tends to vary between the kind of DCT and the programming. Mine is in a 2013 M3, BMW did a very good job with the programming of the box and the clutches are of the wet variety. In automatic mode it feels like any other auto, but the shifts are lightning quick. Box seems to know what gear to be in at the right time, and if it needs to change down or up it can do it plenty fast enough. Crawling in traffic is not advised, the best thing to do is move forward a car length at a time if you can help it, otherwise it will ride the odd gears clutch. Though the wear is probably minimal, since the clutch is oil-submerged and computer-controlled essentially flawlessly. It's really something that is best experienced in-person. It's like a manual trans, only the clutch is operated by the most competent driver in the world.
Manual mode is the real riot though. Perfectly rev-matched downshifts, snappy and solid upshifts, and it's all done insanely fast and without fuss. Drove an M4 some time ago and that DCT was even better. Definitely not a slushbox.
Can't speak for other DCTs like in Fords; apparently those are dry clutch and kinda shit for reliability. The best DCT experience would have to be in a Porsche with PDK. BMW is a nice way to get into a good DCT without it being too terribly pricey. DSG Audis are also good.
If/when reliable DCTs become commonplace in everyday cars, I'll be fine with owning one. Not having a slushbox and being able to choose when to shift are the "manual" aspects I care about. I don't mind operating a manual clutch, but I can certainly live without it.
Hopefully the norm will be something like paddles or steering wheel buttons and not some cheesy pseudo-shifter in the console just for the semblance of tradition.
In the present, though, DCT isn't really in the preferred value range of most of us Veeky Forumstists; our options are generally slushbox or stickshift. And slushboxes suck, especially on the underpowered turds that most of us drive.
I do. Lancer Ralliart. The auto is jerky in suburban driving but it accelerates like mad. Changing gears with the column-mounted paddles or the +/- on the shifter is instant, though not as satisfying as the 5spd would feel.
They should've offered it with the 5spd and a little more bite than the equivalent year WRX.
Sounds pretty cool actually. I would still feel like I had less control than a manual transmission. Even with the paddles, it's just not the same.
I understand that, essentially the computer controls the clutch exactly how the driver would. It feels entirely seamless. The only situations that slow down operation are things like changing up a gear when on the brakes (DCT anticipates downshift or disengaging clutch while rolling to a stop) or when downshifting while floored (DCT anticipates upshift, will ease into the lower gear as quickly as it can without clutch or gear damage).
So when changing down it automatically gives revs to rev match? And here I am trying to heel toe down shift in my 6mt
That's correct. Rev matches more precisely than the Stig could in the case of DCTs. Essentially a perfect heel-toe downshift.
Daily reminder that baiting and trolling is against the rules.
They're very common... Even a Hyundai Veloster has one
