A balanced game means both teams are pretty close, so neither should change rank by a ton. A stomp means one team is way better than the other, so the winners are too good and the losers are too bad, so they should gain/lose more to achieve their "proper" ranks.

Obviously the bullshit that is matchmaking means that people will always be fucked by it, but it kind of makes sense.
