Awful. Bear in mind that the xbone has a total of 5GB of memory (8 in total, but 3 are at all times dedicated to the OS and such) to act as both general ram and vram. Frankly, it doesn't surprise me at all that we're getting mid-generation upgrades because it's proving to be all but necessary.

It's not surprising. Most people here get their PC building advice from reddit or Veeky Forums and as a result end up spending roughly twice as much as they need to.

A lot of it depends on when you bought your PC pieces more than where. The market fluctuates a lot. There was a time when there was an error with 980 cards and during that month they dropped to $100. Now they're back up.
Chances are, for a practical non autistic shopper, you didn't really waste that much money, so don't feel bad.
As far as where to buy, there's no one place, there's coupons and price discounts everywhere, always changing. The best physical place you can go is Fri's. I travel there with a friend once a year for upgrades. But if you don't live near one, then Newegg is fine if you're assembling all at once.

There's no right place to buy. There's a lot of factors to take into account. My roommate buys mostly used parts from craigslist. His PC is twice as powerful as mine for half the cost, but I don't like the Hassel and Risk.

Here's my 2 cents on the build.
We shouldn't waste money on space. If they want more space, they can buy a cheap external or internal Seagate or WD HDD when they're on sale or on black friday.
Instead, I'm more concerned with reliability and speed. Right now SSD drive differences in price are jokes in that unless you're doing some serious movie editing or art design, you don't need the end all be all model. This SanDisk Ultra II is perfect in this regard. I bought one two days ago for Windows 10 (I wanted my windows 7 to have its own drive) and it works flawlessly and fast. This will load games fast but also boot up the PC very quickly. What's best, it's retailing at $75, but I've seen it for less.
It will get the job done.

RAM is so fucking inexpensive right now that it's laughable. You really owe it to yourself to go out and get another 8 gb if you're not at 16 gb yet, but since we're trying to save money, I'm only reccomending 8 gb.
I don't care what model it is, just make sure it's DDR4. Theoretically you'll be fine with 8, but don't blame me if the price shoots up in a few months and you missed out.

It's mostly a meme. Technically every time you start your PC, it pushes the mobo, fans, and processor a bit. Therefore if you start up less and just use hibernate or sleep, you'll get more startups, but these parts are built to last. You might lose a few months, not a few years.
It's like saying you don't want to have to buy a new car as soon so you're going to start your car less often.

The motherboard is probably one of the few things you don't want to be cheap about. This is a quality yet affordable mobo. The Z-170P. It will allow for upgrading in years to come but has plenty of slots for a starter build. It's missing some bells and whistles like built in WiFi but you can always buy an adapter. I reccomend ASUS because they're reliable.
