I think it's about time we figure out canon Frisk's personality. Does he have one, or is he a self-insert?

I'm thinking the former. Even though we control his actions, his personality changes from Toriel's fight to Asgore's. Before, he was timid and couldn't get the words out of his mouth, but by the time he reached Asgore he was bold and able to clearly say what he needed to say. That's clear character development. There's also the fact that he argues with the narrator in True Lab. Regardless of whether or not the narrator is an actual character, in battle the narrator is supposed to interpret what we made Frisk do, so Frisk going against the narrator is proof he's acting on his own accord.

As an aside, do you think canon Frisk is a flirt, or do we just make him one?

Canonically, they don't have any personality trait throughout the whole game, you're the one controlling them and making them act, including the responses.

They're a self insert without a personality until we give them one with our ACTs. Toby is a hack writer so he made the player do the character writing for him.

the hesitation in true lab and articulation in the asgore battle (which i think only works in TP, Neutral runs lock out the option) are just examples of them acting with less and less of your input required

I think Frisk gains more character as you don't gain EXP. That's why it's only the TP ending that they mention their name.
The timid thing is an interesting point because Frisk just lets people call them the wrong name throughout most of the game.
