Why does 3rd gear always sound the best?

Why does 3rd gear always sound the best?

No idea but you got me thinking... it's been true in all of my cars, too.

I was just thinking about that. It even feels the best to shift into.

Because you have enough speed but not too much wind noise.

Rpm snot to high not to low. It's the median number

It's the perfect gear, you don't get fast enough in second, and you don't have that dank torque in fourth.

>shift into third
>turbo spools
>car fucking pulls

>FiST
>hit 42mph in second

3rd and 4th are closest to the natural rotation of an engine. On most cars, 4th is pretty close to 1.0 gear ratio. your running the engine to the axles direct

2nd is over too quick and I don't redline 4th that often.

3rd is bliss on muh diesel.

>literally can only hear the turbo spooling

>implying second isn't better

Ayshh...I thought i was the only one who thought this.

it's the longest gear when you're launching, so you get to hear a slow but loud build to the high rpm ranges

>On most cars, 4th is pretty close to 1.0 gear ratio. your running the engine to the axles direct

On all cars with conventional transmissions, whether manual or automatic, the final gear is 1:1.

If you have an overdrive gear, that means the driveshaft turns faster than the motor crankshaft.

Your turbo might be nearing the end of it's lifespan.
Considering it's a Fiat, that would be true at 10km on the clock.

Except there is a final drive between.

Fuck off with your memes.
Multijets are literally noiseless at speed, it's no wonder you can hear the turbo spooling and dumping.

>mfw third gear synchro or something is busted and rebuild parts for this box are discontinued and hard as fuck to find

really? where did you find a car with a 1:1 diff?

Up his stupid ass

>Run 1st to 20mph
>2nd takes me all the way to 65 @ 6500

>drive old french V6
>2nd gear take me to 140/160 km/h
>3rd gear up to 200 and beyond
yeaaaaaa boiiii

I know that feel. My synchros aren't quite busted yet but definitely feel tired and parts are sort of available but unreasonably expensive (freshening up the box would cost like $600 in parts, no gears or other heavy duty stuff included). I often yearn for the easy availability and reasonable pricing that comes with the "standard" American boxes like the T56 - there, a rebuild kit costs about the same but the resulting package is much more robust (600+ vs 300 hp or so).
Saab 9k btw, What's yours?

>his car doesnt pull in second

>pull of from light nice and easy
>move up to second and get some solid acceleration but nothing too special
>hit third and it's like a fucking time machine

My MS3 has boost-by-gear, and third gear is when it hits full boost. It already torque steers and pulls hard in the first two, but third is crazy fast

Not memes, personal experience.
Worked (sadly) on a number of Fiats owned by friends, family members etc.
The old 1.9 JTD are bretty gud, un-killable lumps of iron.
The multijets, especially the 1.3, are merit-less soul sucking pieces of shit.

6th gear sounds best for me, who doesn't love gear whine?

This is true. A lot of what others have mentioned is true. 1st and 2nd are too short, and then 3rd you can wind out up to highway speeds and your shitbox sounds like a race car.

>MS3
>Hit 60+ in second

Because the low ones are short and high ones are long
>tfw 80km/h is the 1st gear redline

>mfw shifting into 3rd and opening the throttle on my R6

Never heard about any issues with them.
Also know many people who have various versions of the same engine with high mileages and never had issues.
Some of them are even remapped.

reverse is best simply due to the satisfying clank

but yeah 3rd is great for dropping into and pulling good
