Holy shit, shells were nerf'd hard, I recall wide 4 shells doing like 44 damage uncharged.
I was fighting crystalbeard and seeing how his hitzones are pretty trash it made me want to see if a shelling based set was worth it.
the easiest place to hit is his back legs which are a 24 hitzone. Wide 4 does 47 damage, 68 when charged (with artillery expert + food)

if he's standing you won't be able to hit his front arms with pokes because they're too high, and spamming upswings only is very slow, so it seems that shelling is a better option.
how do the speeds of shell compare to the speed of pokes though? no amount of googling allowed me to find the speeds of specific attacks.

the free trial in frontier lets you access all of low rank and high rank, which has every monster from freedom 2 (minus giadrome) and a bunch of frontier exclusives i'd say it's definitely worth trying out, if only because it's free

I played GS and Lance for a bit in Tri for a while and haven't played in a long time. I recently got a 3DS and Generations and want to try something new, been using Adept Charge Blade. Mostly I just go hit shit until I have phials, then go into Axe mode and use the A button attacks to blow everything up. Is there a better way to play I should know?

You can fight pretty much all the monsters pre MHF-G. Stuff like Gogomoa, Abiorugu, Taikun Zamuza, Nono and Kamu Orugaron, Akura Vashimu and Jebia, Berukyurosu and Doragyurosu, etc. Though only LR and HR versions.

When you're during your charge burst in axe modo, tap R.Trigger and your phial energy will be transferred into your shield for extra damage in axe mode again and also I think better blocking in sword modo.

You said Adept style? I use Guild since I like having all my moves, so it works with that. I don't know what moves are not included from style to style so that may not be an option on adept.
Personally, if I was running a weapon with a Shield, I wouldn't be using a style other than guild. And CB with all of its moves may be more useful to you damage wise. Either way it may be important to know if you ever decide to use it without style.
