It was big news at the time. A TV show called Street Tuner Challenge (lasted 3 seasons on the SPEED network) not only covered the event, but also the building of 3 cars that were compared in the season finale. That season featured that Chevy Cobalt, an R32 Nissan Skyline GTR (they went hardcore with it putting foam in the frame rails) and I believe a Volkswagen Jetta GLI.
It made news because no one had ever banned a car or company from competing in a time attack event before.
