What do you ACTUALLY need a torque wrench for? Engine components? Because I've been going by my feeling on spark plugs and axles for two years now and it hasn't resulted in any problems, not that two years is a lot of experience

Anything that you REALLY wouldn't want to come loose. Or that you really wouldn't want to strip.
It's not like they cost much and gives you peace of mind that things wont/shouldn't fall apart.

Torque wrench is good for axles, head bolts, oil drain plugs (although definitely not necessary for them), engine mounting bolts, internals...
It's just a precision tool, if you're okay with sloppy work then don't worry about it but you'll pay any consequences
