I don't remember all the details, but it's confirmed somewhere the School of Mensis and the Church have the same roots and similar goals, with some distinct differences that created a rivalry.
Particularly, Laurence came from Byrgenwerth, so did Micolash. He's wearing the student uniform, and uses Byrgenwerth/Choir spells.
