it's persona 4 again story-wise. traitor is obvious. exact same plot structure. no callbacks to p1 or p2. demons are literally just there, the game doesn't do anything interesting with them. character development is shallow. no homo path

i know it's silly, but i was actually. the aesthetic ties are there and the inclusion of demons made me think they were going to somehow tie it in to the overarching plot.

Still better than the ridiculousness of P4 and P5. And either way, it's not the story itself that counts. You can have a 10/10 story and still be shitty because of writing and pacing, areas were all 3 latest Personas are terrible.

I swear a lot of MegaTen games don't even feel like they have stories. More like, fairy tales. Similar to mythology shit, like Isis bringing Osiris back to life and giving him a golden penis which somehow impregnated her. It doesn't make any fucking sense, but it's still interesting as fuck.

"Story" would imply connections to characters. But all SMTs end with two of your buddies getting fanatic regardless of what you do and you invariably kill at least one of them. You have to somehow include way to portray your character as both extremes and the reasonable guy to have continuity in the routes you choose.
White Issachar asks you about your opposite choice's representative and you can answer with "Forget about Walter". What meaningful story can you reasonably make if in most choices you are free to not give a fuck about any of the main characters.

I mean, for mainline at least that's largely because it's about putting you in the role of the MC within a conflict. It's all about the experience of it - discovering the world, carving out your own path in it, working with what it gives you, etc. It's closer to a Dragon Quest/WRPG style of story telling than a Final Fantasy.

On the other hand, this is why the subseries and games like SMTII are more popular. They're more traditionally JRPG with respect to how they handle storytelling.

SMTIV? If so, denying their demands once or twice seems to increase the chances of success over just doing everything they ask for. Also, only negotiate when there's only one enemy demon alive.
