By MMO standards, the story is good

But in general, the story is shit.

As a human being, there is nothing to take from the story other than "war is bad"

It's kind of hard for an MMO format game to have an engaging story because it must constantly be updated. Good stories are ones that are finished.

I don't think anyone praises the story as being the best in the series. The great bulk of the story is poorly told, and its side stories are better. The moments where the MSQ doesn't suck are basically the tailend of ARR (and that gets turned on its head anyway) and most of HW's Dragonsong War story. The only times ARR's story was good were the times Nero and Gaius did just about anything before Lahabrea turned the story to shit again, and Gaius became a joke never to live up to his 1.0 self.

The game's story is "good" compared to most of the other MMOs right now. As a Final Fantasy game, it isn't the case. It just has its moments

HW's story was easily on par with a lot of RPGs in recent years. Although, that may not be saying much.

I feel like I am doing it for myself. I have kind of given up on the approval of others. Its just not the way to go because its unstable and temporary. I mean I want to help people and have them like my company, but I wish it wasn't just about the character itself you know. Why can't people make a name here for their good deeds?

I'd say it was pretty good in general. I always wanted to find out what happened next (and still do) and I wasn't disappointed with any of the MSQ installments except 3.1.

You do realize that most of the characters that get a lot of praise in this thread are from their friends, right? They like them because they're fun to be around.

The people with a pretty character and no personality don't typically last very long unless they really force themselves despite no one liking them.

But the most well known ebins throughout history have had the cutest characters and less than redeeming qualities.

It was, at least, a step up over the majority of ARR's story. I'd say they learned from ARR, on that front and the cutscenes themselves. The Dragonsong War, by itself, is better than any part of ARR's story. They also improved the instanced story battles (like the grand melee and your duel) while also giving Nidhogg a good sendoff (shame EX is boring) and seeing actual character development in Alphinaud.

At the same time, though, I can't think of it as being the best in the series. I'm still far too biased in favour of FF9 and 10, though, and have a soft spot for 3 and 6. The Warring Triad side story in XIV is great, too

The side quests aren't that good either. They were short so wasn't built up well, and how the quests and cutscenes were like made it even bad.

The story itself feels really rushed and doesn't have good build up. In ARR, it wa so incomplete that they throw some fetch quests as a filler. Heavensward was just okay but there are things about it I don't really like, like how Haurchefant's death was just too sudden and how they seem pathetic, like Ysayle's sacrifice being undone easily after that cutscene because it only made a dent in that airship.
