How do you determine the characters you are going to use in a playthrough?
I often find it difficult to choose one over another like currently in fates (hishido) i don't now which of the pegasus riders i should choose. Also i got another magic user (the young looking one) but i like orochi already.
It'S hard to tell if a unit is going to be good or if a better unit of this class is going to appear.
I guess it doesn't matter that much in sacred stones, awakening and fates since you have grinding option but i'm asking in general. I also tend to choose looks and personality over usefulness and i guess this is because you build an emotional connection to the characters

I try thinking of the long term. Like "who can I see joining me for the final battle?" and it's usually characters who can hold their weight through the rest of the game.

You don't have to worry about that in Birthright and Revelations because you can just grind, so I usually think long term for Conquest instead. For example, I've never once found a use for Silas past the early chapters, same with Nyx. Meanwhile Xander always makes it to the end because he's simply too good, and for the first time I actually started using Leo because I felt like a good magic user would be useful. And despite his slowness, he was useful, especially when in Attack Stance.

In your case, choose whoever you want. Grind them up and build Supports to get an idea of what their characters are like personality wise if you're into that.

I usually just go based on looks and choose one of each class

Since you are playing Birthright then you can pretty much get away with using whoever you want, though some of course take more effort to make decent units than others.

Most of us already know about all of the characters, but in general there are only 2-3 characters of each class starting out. I'd think more of what classes you want to use and, if you don't mind maybe grinding some resources, class changing your favorites as you think is best.

So say you like Orochi. Look over her stats and think of where she needs help the most, which would be her speed. Give her a class with higher speed and some stat boosters to help along. As for pairings just kinda feel out who you like together. I tend to pair based on who I feel have better supports together, even though in some cases this isn't considered statistically efficient compared to other pairings. Main thing is that unless you are on Lunatic it isn't so difficult as that.

Setsuna: just considering it to test if archers are finally reliable now that they are included in the triangle
