They really would. Swiftness, health regen, mana regen (if you use magic stuff), ammo conservation (if you sue guns or bows), and a few others would really help you. As for weapons, it depends on your class. Aim for the megashark if you're ranged. The clockwork you (hopefully) got from wof will help you with mecha bosses. Daedlus stormbow with holy arrows or jester's arrows will be invaluable for the destroyer.

You can always try and make big open farming areas for some of the new weapons available when hardmode hits. Some good magic weapons and a good yoyo in the underground ice, surface mimic farm for the new accessories, you can grind hell monsters for a yoyo there as well.
