I'll be honest here, when I list 7-8 situational 2-5k cost items I'm putting myself in a pretty safe spot as far as discussion goes, because damn I literally say 'it can be good and it can be bad', but what you're saying is that you for example have a team of morph(offlane/support whatever), earth spirit, zeus, od and bat or timber or whatever, then medallion would be the item choice over force/veil(zeus probably goes this) or glimmer if the enemy team have heavy nuke dmg or will have trouble carrying sufficient anti invis?
