Oh no, user, that's so sad! If it's any consolation, sometimes store bought fish end up being sick and not showing symptoms until after you buy them (I actually lost a goldfish this way as a kid)! If you're worried it was a matter of neglect, you might want to read up on what bettas need to be healthy and happy and see if you missed anything - they can be deceptively tricky to take care of if you want them to live for a long time, and a lot of people make mistakes with their first one!
