Isn't that counterproductive since if the polls are tight then wouldn't moderates and liberals (particularly Bernouts) be less likely to feel secure in placing third party votes and more likely to vote for Hillary to spite Trump. Whereas if the polls are heavily Hillary favored then some liberals may feel overconfident in an assured victory and throw votes to third party candidates or not bother voting at all.

Surely Hillary having a big lead would give third party candidates more draw vs. Hillary since Trump voters aren't going to be voting third party if Trump is very behind.

But especially in battleground states which are very close, where if a third party candidate took a portion of would-be Hillary voters, which is most likely because most third party candidates are socially liberal which puts them in more direct competition with Hillary's voterbase.

That could feasibly make a difference in states like Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania.
