Normal set is used by default in most rooms, room set is only used in the girl's room. You can make them wear the same stuff either way though. Even the bath set can be anything.

To clarify, the character DOES show up in the "load character" window, but NOT in the "Save character" window.
Meaning if I want to make further alterations, I have to make a new save of them again.

Any character who's assigned to a room can't be overwritten. If you want to edit a girl that's already in your room. You need to remove her first. Unfortunately this also means you'll have to start your game progress all over for her.

You can still change her looks using the change appearance option. You just can't edit and save using the character maker.
