Become mechanic

>become mechanic
>think it will be cool to learn how to fix cars
>maybe build a race car in spare time
>get a job at a small workshop for decent pay
>6 years of trying to keep garbage european cars on the road
>any time a BMW or mercedes comes in i contemplate suicide
>german engineer being good is a meme started by marketing and parroted by people that dont know any better
>cant afford to quit and i don't know how to do anything else
>seriously, fuck anyone who designs or owns a european car

Should have gotten a career in ecoboost

That's why I only buy Japanese cars.

You are a good person. Steer clear of nissan though, theyre just rebadged renault now

>>think it will be cool to learn how to fix cars
LMAOOO

I know. That was my grave mistake

i wish more people would realise jap =/= crap

>become mechanic
confirmed for retard

I would never buy a German car desu

Should only work on American cars.

is that a piece of a z32 caliper?

Mechanic here, euro cars are fine to work on you fucking softcock.

Its not even just the cars that are garbage, the owners are too. Had a guy come in a couple years ago with some high spec mercedes AMG. 3 years old done 50,000kms and it needed brake pads and rotors all round, the kicker is that they were carbon ceramic shit. I give the guy a $9,000 price just to do his brakes and he flips it at me saying im trying to rip him off and that im a scumbag. Its not my fault he bought factory ricer upgrades

N16 pulsar block, guy thought the oil light was cosmetic

Try working on some real cars eurocuck

>Girl at work belongs to "muh German engineering" family
>She's trying to tell me that her '03 Jetta is more reliable than any Japanese car
>Show her three different dependability studies pegging VW as solidly below industry average, above only FCA
>She tells me that that's just my opinion

I'm not a eurofag, I'm an ausfag. I work on tonnes of different shit, and if you aren't mentally retarded euros are fine to work on.

>independent studies are opinions
Brain damage is a serious issue, get her help

Im working on an alpha now, clutch to be specific. Ive already come across 5 different ways this car could have been made better and saved a lot of time and theyre all common sense shit. Ive only taken out the battery and undone the cables at the top of the gearbox

he's probably one of those people that say Subarus are hard to work on too

I on the other hand will probably never again buy anything else except BMW. I know they're a bitch to maintain, but it's all labor of love.
On the other hand, I hate working on other peoples BMWs because they're not mine, working on them doesn't have a clear benefit for me aside for keeping the money rolling in.

Im the same way, anytime a eurotrash pos rolls into the lot i get pissed. Such shit cars and the customers are all cheap, broke assholes.

>alfa
>looking for better ways to do shit

no wonder you're miserable.

>She tells me that that's just my opinion
>She

And there is your problem. You won't get through to her no matter what you do.

I think its more of "if they made the bolt go from the other side then i wouldnt need to take the whole crossmember off" kind of shit that euros are infamous for

What if German cars were actually better but the people who buy them, buy them because they are German and are better, so that they dont have to worry about things like, oil, coolant, air pressure, etc.

Good idea: learning how to do something that you think you'll enjoy
Bad idea: doing it for a living

Honestly I have a hard time feeling bad for anyone who regrets becoming a mechanic. You knew what you were getting into. Everyone told you not to do it, that you would hate your life, but you just plugged your ears and shouted "LALALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU" and did it anyway.

im also an mechanic/technician, i think german cars has some issues in them but they arent so bad (some bmw, vw engines are pretty shit, mercs are better). but in japanesecars toyota has far more better choices than nissan. some nissans like from the 90s have shitty choices in chasis structure, and nissan engines are more unrealibe than toyotas.

but i enjoy my job for some reason, french cars are the worst

Pretty much the same story with me, I couldn't ever standing working on anything euro, especially german.

I worked at a diesel garage for a long time, we had detroit and Mercedes engines that we mainly worked on. The mercedes was a slightly inferior engine in terms of power, got a little better mpgs, and was about 3X as complex as the detroit. Any money you saved on gas definitely was offput by the amount of labor you'd have to pay for the goddamn thing.

That's typically what german engineering is, does basically the same thing as anyone else, but it's way more complex so OMG IT'S SO HIGH TECH, SO ENGINEER!!!

This isn't a new philosophy, german engineering is a pretty old concept to them, and it's lost them several wars.

How's the race car?

Remember the good old days when you didnt need to dismantle of the engine to change the alternator? What the fuck happened?

how are porsches, audis, and VWs?

If you work at a eurotrash dealer its probably not that bad, but its the independent shop guys that get stuck working on the old, neglected, 100k+ cars that Tyrone picked up at the lot for $6k with a 25% interest loan who cant even afford the most basic maintenance on it. The car only gets brought in when it won't move anymore after years of abuse and you know the customer has no money and is going to be a whiney bitch about parts on his imported, luxury car costing so much more than the ford focus he used to drive.

This is what happens 99% of the time in my experiences.

use your skills in the machine or fabrication trades

as an electrical and security specialist i planned to have a diverse career selection at a young age

You have shit tools.
>Snap on bitch

it's cute your tool truck driver has pet names for you

Take classes in CAD and become a CNC operator

The snap on guy calls me cash cow, I don't call your cow sisters anything when I have them get at each other with the strap on.

>tfw professional mechanic and I use almost exclusively Harbor Freight tools
>tfw that's $10,000+ a year I'm taking home and not giving to the tool truck guy
>tfw why would anyone buy Snap-On sockets and screwdrivers?

This.

There a lot of really cool euro cars, but I can hardly afford them in the first place, let alone all the inevitable repair bills and time off work because no car while it sits in the shop.

Women, amirite fellas?

I've had 2 harbor freight socket drivers break on me. They got replaced for free but still it's a fucking bitch to hear over and swap them out on the middle of a project

...

Me too bro. I'm getting rich, not tool dude.

>responding to yourself

I've got backups for the things that actually break (pretty much anything with a spring in it), but I still only need to replace a tool every 3-6 months. 3 HF ratchets in each size is still cheaper than a single Snap-On ratchet.

Plus there's a handful of tools that HF just can't get right. I use Channel Lock brand channel locks because Harbor Freight just can't manage to make a set that are actually useful for anything.

>Thought the oil light was cosmetic
My sides

are volvos that bad?

>be apprentice
>always liked cars not loved
>decide to become mechanic because I like learning about complex machines
>volunteer for any job involving Nazi cars as they are always a whole other ball game then domestics or Japanese cars
>previously be service advisor
>speak to cheap ass customers in plain English, explain recommended work, fluid changes etc in an honest, straight forward way
>developed small customer base, do easy light bulbs for $10 versus the $30 listed in the catalogue because it takes 5 mins
>shop becomes known for honesty and good customer service like using floor mats and seat covers to keep old rich white people happy

I'm always busy and getting customers to request my services and book appointments while other tire installers sit around. It takes logic, patience and trim panel tools and German cars will make you big money you whiny bun.

Pic related German engineering at its best

i never had this idea. almost as dumb as joining the marines.

what 100% confirmed reliable german cars are there ? only things that come to mind are E30, w12?

>inb4 people posting anecdotal evidence of them buying a $300 e36 325i that they never got on the road

Golf 2 1.9 TDI

Original bug/van/Karmann Ghia

I remember watching a hippie bus burn to the ground in front my house in the early 70s.

wow ur old

Is studying transport engineering/auto maintainence a meme?

It's one of my couple shitty options desu. I'd like to learn about cars and would like to be able to fix my car myself but the course is the hardest in the university and i may become OP desu.

German engineering is great if your definition of engineering success is something working 100% under ideal conditions with maintenance by a trained professional.

A German might ask, Why do you want to fix things? Leave that to the mechanic!

when i started my boss told me to just buy cheap shit, he knew it was all i could afford - and if anything ever broke/wore out, then replace it with a better brand

5 years on i've still got a decent amount of the original tools

>become a mechanic because love cars
>the more I learn about them and work on them the more I hate them
>don't enjoy driving anymore because of fear that something will break down

They day i buy a jap car over any german car. I'll take some serious maintianence costs before im even considering jap shit.

>he though being a mechanic would be cool

You need to reach both maximum love and maximum hate. Then you'll be in the middle where understanding lies.

Trying to condense all my tools into one cart, now it will be really easy to push my box down to the next shop every year. Maybe I'll put a little briggs and stratton motor and a steering wheel on it

Need tool recommendations. I'm not making any more right now but need tools before I start applying for garages. Currently using Papa's tools.
What tools do I buy? Williams or Wrights look cheap as fuck and I've been told good things.

...

Well yes alfas are a fucking joke, when saying euro I was meaning BMW/merc/Audi/etc. Even Peugeot and Renault are better than alfas

Kek, more than likely

Is this the 3/8 flex head ratchet? That thing is a fucking piece of shit, mine has had bits replaced about 5 times now, the flex head mechanism is a pile of crap. O honestly regret buying it.

Thanks good luckin

I've had mine for 12 years, only had to replace the pin once, but mine isn't the locking kind like that guys

>A German might ask, Why do you want to fix things? Leave that to the mechanic!
And then they go build a car thats literally designed not to be fixed

Im OP and subaru are the easiest to work on. People meme about head gaskets but really it takes minimal tools to pull the engine out and then you got all the room in the world to play with

>BMW/merc/Audi/etc. Even Peugeot and Renault
All of those are garbage too

The buses suffered from high heat build up in the engine bays that would deteriorate the fuel lines. Eventually fuel would leak onto the hot engine and ignite.

Switched careers three years ago from mechanic to railroad. One of my better decisions. Never understood why so many mechanics are scared of euro. It's just nuts and bolts.

iirc this happens after an improper fuel filter replacement because for some reason Volkswagen braided the fuel lines in fabric and if you route it wrong, it touches the exhaust and burns away.

On a slightly related note, my father long ago owned a VW van in which he accidentally set himself on fire with a joint, while driving it. He had this enormous Bob Ross afro and it just went up.

Oh god, human hair is the worst fucking smell when it burns.

>Never understood why so many mechanics are scared of euro. It's just nuts and bolts.
Its not as if its particularly difficult. They're just a waste of time

>It's just nuts and bolts.
Maybe in the 70s, new Euro cars are plastic clips and push in expanders

Had a guy come in once with a polo saying his headlights were just sitting there flopping around. His wife had nudged the front while parking it and that broke every clip holding the lights in

What is this Pepe

Waste of time tonwork on a car when the job paid to work on cars. Not really following your logic.

What ever you wto call it. Take it apart and out it back together. Euro cars aren't that much more difficult if at all.

This reminds me of guys who were scared to do timing belts and gaskets

Waste of time as in why do i gotta pull half the car apart to change a thermostat

And get paid for all the labor. As an owner, fuck that. As they guy swinging the wrenches, bring it on.

Op,what about Alfa Romeo, Fiats and other Italian cars?

Op, how are Volvo's compared to other euros, yes, parts are ripoff, but mechanical design-wise...

pretty much me, ive been a mechanic for nearly 6 years. after the 2nd year mark i started hating work, especially Fords and European cars. 5 year mark i got burned out

economy here in Canada went to shit and i should be thankful to still have the job with cut hours, but now im forced to do a job i hate to just survive. i want to go back to school for a desk job

yep, ruins the hobby. ive got 2 project vehicles that have sat untouched for 3-4 years each, touch them a bit if my girlfriend starts bitching to try to get them running

Kek'd hard

save up.

I've got my red-seal and I've got my tool box at home. School starts in September, changing fields.

Wrenching for a living sucks balls man. I worked at a mitsu dealer so I'd very rarely see European cars.

Try to get hired at a specialty/performance shop where you have the chance to come up with creative solutions to problems

I always have a good laugh when i point out several examples from different european manufacturers and always get the "yeh but everyonr knows those ones are shit. B-but the others are good, i swear". Why are euro apologists so delusional?

>buy Audi A4
>everything going good so far for the past 8 months
>install coilovers
>CEL comes on
>EVAP small leak

Purge valve is good, so I replaced my fuel cap ($50 OEM lol), hoping the light doesn't come back on. It'll be $100 just to use the smoke injector.

Almost all of those tools should be Harbor Freight, except for SnapOn Double-80 for the ratchets (but not sockets or accessories), and Makita for the power tools. Oh, and literally anything that's not HF for the flashlight.

>waste 5 years of my life as a ferd tech
>realize all cars are shit, no exceptions

Them digits doe

This. You have to bend over and get on all four, plus with the free knee pads you can suck on his cock to pay for all those 'fancy' tools you break every weekend m8

this is nice story but what kind of situation are you in where you find it appropriate to pull out three different studies to prove a co-worker's car is shitty in a minor argument

sounds a little bit

autistic

Yes mate they sure are. And you are a very special child, much more special than anyone else.

Which seat do you prefer on the bus? Front or back?
