S U B C O M P A C T Car Thread

Lads,

I'm in the market for a car. A small, inexpensive, new or barely used, 2015 or 2016 model subcompact car. I've brought down the list as follows:
>Honda Fit
>Ford Fiesta
>Nissan Versa Note
>Scion/Toyota/Mazda "Yaris" iA
>Scion/Toyota/Mazda "Corolla" iM

Your thoughts? Any other recommendations/suggestions? Thank you

is a fiesta really subcompact? its not that small

Oh woops. I should've stated that its the hatchback of the Ford Fiesta that I'd like. Not the sedan

>Fiesta sedan
Fucking burgers
Everything needs to be a sedan or a truck

Don't. These cars only exist because faggots can't afford to drop 3k on a good used civic.

>t. pic related

well the fit is pretty nice. its less ugly than the civic.
the fiesta is a pretty big car, park one next to a focus and the difference isn't huge. the fiesta st is pretty good though.
the versa is garbage

My civic doesn't even have vtec.

But I don't want a Civic. Nor a $3,000 crap car.

It's not a crap car. Well built, decent interior quality for an economy car, aux jack capable with the oem radio, big windows, no driver aids. It's everything you need an nothing you don't.

And there's an Si version, in yurop at least.

Kinda have to elaborate more on what features you want or value OP.

They all essentially accomplish the same thing, cheap A to B commuting.

How often do you drive on the highway? Driving one of these above highway speeds is like riding in a roller-coaster. I don't mind too much, but it freaks out passengers.
Maybe if you're in the city or not adamant about being in the left lane all the time, it'll work for you. The new Scion iA (Jap Mazda 2) or Honda Fit are my pick. Don't buy a Versa

The Twizy!

why is it called jazz? even in japan its called fit

Ford F-150

Only Honda's marketing department knows.

I don't know why I called it that.
Because you're right. It isn't one. I owned a 2005 Civic with the Aux Jack and it was a fantastic reliable ride. However I sold it. Low time in life. Breakup. Crappy memories probably translated into me saying it was a crappy car. Replaced with an 09 Kia Sportage which I didn't like. Now I'm just trying to buy something newer and small with good MPGs and a nice look.

Would like AUX or Bluetooth only, really. Automatic transmission. Power mirrors.

Cool, thanks for info. Yeah, I hardly drive on highway. If I do it'll be for a max 30-45min to and from. I take the rail into work so any driving I do outside of work is city. I also owned a big land barge for just city driving and while it was pretty cool to drive an old American car, the big gas consumption, the problems and issues that came with (mechanically), the largeness of it - it just wasn't too practical (if there's such a thing as a practical city driving car).

If you check carreliabilityindex, the Honda is the most reliable car of them all

If you want something that looks decent why are you looking at subcompacts? They're all shitty modern car design.

How much can you spend? Cash or financing? How much down? How much do you make a month? Do you know your credit score?

>why are you looking at subcompacts?
Inexpensive & cheap price. I'm in the process of buying a house right now, so I don't want to add in another cost with an expensive car.

I can spend at max, $20k. Give a little more if needed. Down payment + financing. Perhaps even outright buy it if possible or if it's really cheap. $3150 after taxes and medical rates. Yep. 750+

Honda Fit, most practial
Ford Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost, ecutune = 150bhp on 1000kg, a rocket
Another one I would consider is the Mazda 2

Dont forget the Suzuki swift. Really overlooked little hatch. Sport version is maybe the last NA hot hatch left, and is really fun. Plus its pretty cheap

I'm leasing an iM for $149/mo

I just use it to go to work because I park in the ghetto and I'd rather not drive my 2.5RS there which will most likely be stolen.

0 paid maintenance for 3 years and only like $5000 out of pocket for that time is a good deal to me.

sounds like a good deal to me too user. thanks for the input m80

Brand new, I think they just don't stack up to the competition, but you can get a second hand one for a pretty good price.

GOAT coming through

>Being dropped this much of a height

>Meth not even once the car.
>The Suzuki meth project.

>he actually thinks he can get 150hp from a 1.0L already plagued with issues
l o l

There's already a 150hp version from the factory.

I dont suggest making large purchases while in the middle of settling a mortgage unless you are really well off. It probably wont ruin anything, but its better to wait until after close.

You mean 125hp.

The Fiesta is great.

Always though those were cool. Any engine swaps available to make em fast?

I was thinking 4g63 AWD swap would be pretty rad.

You guys, what about KPOP subcompacts?

>not buying a town car
>not being able to do parallel parking with a 30 foot car

that fucking game. I keep trying to buy it on my WiiU but it wont let me.

Velosters are garbage.

No, there's also a 150hp version. 80, 100, 125 and 150. Accordingly to pumaspeed the 100&125 are the same engine but with different mapping, for $500 one can tune his 100hp to 150hp.

But cute garbage

I don't remember what language (I think swedish) the name fit is close to the word fitta, which means cunt.
Which is why it's called a Jazz

Looking for a DD for traffic, Is the VW Golf Mk4 2.0 litre any good?

no swap needed
youtube.com/watch?v=qC1Su_VVtd4

swap the head from the G13b for instant 30-40hp, stock internals can handle 15lbs boost. forged internals can be had for ~$1000.

Not really m8

2.0 litre is the worst of all of the mk4's aim for a TDI for DD.

I bought a Chevy Sonic new, 700 trade in, 0 down for 12300 OTD. My payments are 215 monthly.

The good:
Base model has great value for what you pay.
1.8l 138hp is near the top on its class.
5 star crash rating, 10 airbags
Near the top in its class for roominess.
Chevy has been letting these go for cheap.

The bad:
Air intake pipe can crack on 2015 and older models.
Polarizing instrument cluster.
Hard plastic interior.
Doesn't hold value well because of its predecessor the Aveo.

For me, the good outweighed the bad.

The Fit is definitely the best in its class. It wasn't for me though. Give the Sonic a test drive though, you might find it offers everything you need at a price that a home-buyer can be comfortable with.

Just a quick reminder that I'm gonna be wanting an Automatic transmission as I can't into stick. So no Fiesta ST for me

OP here. Thanks for your review brother. Yeah, I didn't add the Sonic to my shortlist because >Chevy and I wasn't much of a fan of how it looked. But I'll keep my eye out for them though, I know they're cheap. I also like the "Sonic" name tbqhwu

Oh, absolutely user.

Glad you recognized the game user. I should whip out my Genesis and play it someday

my only choices is a 1.6 petrol and the 2.0 petrol

How about not being a pussy?

Kek. I feel bad for people who wants a sports car and have to settle for something like the BMW 1 series.

People who can afford an M135i aren't really the sort of people who would have to settle for it. But yeah, the lower range is a bit underwhelming, not because of the engine, but because of the shitty budget suspension. I've driven the 320i with the stock non-optional suspension and it reminded me of the E36 non-ti compacts, and not in a good way.

Whelp, I'd have absolutely no problem owning a 130i. The 3.0L six in a small hatchback holds its own, regardless as to whether there's a higher performance option or not.

M135i is a very fun car, friend of mine just bought one.

It's like driving a 1.5ton truck. Subcompacts are awesome because they are so small and light, the 1series is not. Also the seating position in the 1 series is way too high for being "sporty".

Still a fun car regardless, faster than most things in its price range.

>Also the seating position in the 1 series is way too high for being "sporty"
OP is after a slushbox hair dresser commuter. Don't think he/she's interested in "sporty".

I am interested in sporty, but without breaking the Bank. I also don't know how to drive stick

No, it's like driving a 1.4 tonne "real wheel drive" hatchback, which relatively is also small and light. And the seating position is arbitrary, and easily changed.

>I am interested in "sporty"
>I also don't know how to drive stick
So you're going to drive around some bends with some speed thinking that's sporty?

Sadly yeah
I'm cool with hairdresser too though

Also I don't need to go fast. Straight roads where I live. No hills. Barely drive on highways. 95% city/town driving where I always hit stoplights

Get a Mazda 2

Accordingly to BMW the i140M is 1525kg as RWD and with a manual and over 1600kg with xdrive. And it's big compared to any "subcompact".

Learn how to drive stick then. Don't buy a automatic because you are to lazy to spend a afternoon learning it.

I tried learning stick on a 94 Miata for 15 min and couldn't get past 1st gear. Always stalled. Then gave up, didn't wanna burn clutch. I've spent hours watching how-to videos on stick driving, too

Ah yes. Toyota Yaris iA/Scion iA. Def interested in it

How can you even be so bad? My grandma didn't want a automatic because she thought that it was too complicated. One can hardly take a drivers license here without learning stick.

>Accordingly to BMW
I was specifically talking about a 130i, but ok. Even still, the 1525kg is not "heavy" for an M140i

1525kg would not be heavy if it was a 5series. But for a fucking hatchback? Compare it to a Mazda 3 that's about the same size and weights about 300kg less.

>1525kg would not be heavy if it was a 5series.
I think you're forgetting this isn't 1986 anymore.

Doesn't change the fact that >1500kg for a small car is heavy. It will probably get lighter in the future once carbon-tubs gets cheaper to produce, the 6cyl being swapped for a 4cyl, the body being swapped to aluminum, the glass to gorilla glass and the oilpan to a plastic one.

Mazda manages to keep the weight about the same today as in the past, deal with it.

>Mazda manages to keep the weight about the same today as in the past, deal with it.
I think you outta check the weight between a 323 from 1986 and current 3. Then return with a big mouth full of humble pie.

The new Miata weights just a tad more than the first gen and less than the second gen. The current 3 is bigger than the old 323, the current Mazda 2 is a better comparison.

Just admit that BMWs are pigfat

>The current 3 is bigger than the old 323
You don't say. It's still THE 323 successor.
>the current Mazda 121 successor is a better comparison.
Because the true successors became "pigfat". Your words.

>Mazda 323F(BA)
>1150kg manual V6
>Mazda speed 3
>1430kg
>difference 280kg

>3 series compact (E36)
>1250kg manual V6
>i140M
>1525kg
>difference is 275kg

But yeah it's ugly for some reason. I actually like the compact more for having balls to keep the long E36 hood, people were able to cram the BMW V12, and thing is fucking huge even by V12 standards.

>Mazda speed 3
>1430kg

>i140M
>1525kg
I'd happily cop a 100kg deficit if the trade off is proper wheel drive and a proper engine configuration.

Fit is not ugly? Are you serious? Its like a fucking mini van, i puke everytime I see one

>velosturd

These is the answer OP. Just pick one

There is also a 10000€ difference on those, but yeah, poorfags can't deny which one of those is the hotter hatch.

>15 mins
>managed to get the car going
>couldn't upshift
Do you have to concentrate to breathe?

To be fair the only time I tried was in a cemetery with narrow ass roads, so I was afraid of hitting a tombstone or something
I should try again in a big parking lot

So now it's close to jizz in English. Good job Honda product planners!

Sounds kool i guess, instead of fit because it sounds gay and fagotty.

My wife's fit

When she got it she had her heart set on a Civic but honestly the civic isn't worth the money by comparison. Get most of the same interior goodies, gets 42 MPG, has fuck tons of room, and has respectable rear leg/head room.

Not the best on long road trips but for a DD its a nice little ecobox.

I own a 2016 Mazda 2, or Scion/Toyota iA/Yaris sedan as it is called in the US. It has better interior than the Fit (Jazz), Versa, Fiesta, and Yaris hatchbacks. Equipment-wise it's on par with its competitors, although I've heard that in some markets, the 2 doesn't come with features like auto-leveling headlamps and cruise control.

Fuel economy is good, I regularly get 35 MPG in the city and I managed to hit 62 MPG on the highway.

Now, the bad:

Bigger exterior dimension than the Fit, but has probably the worst interior space in the segment. Trunk space is pitiful, even for subcompact standards.

i-Stop system is finicky, it has to meet 3 requirements for it to trigger: AC, battery, and engine. If you set the AC to roughly 4C lower than the ambient temperature, you will never engage the i-Stop system because the engine needs to run the alternator to power it. Tiny movements of the steering wheel will restart your engine, so will a change in brake pedal pressure. You can shift to N and let go of the brakes. If you touch the brakes again, the engine will start. Be prepared to change the battery and starter motor if you engage it often. Crawling traffic is HARD on this system, so just disable it and engage it on traffic lights.

Auto-braking system (SCBS) will probably cause an accident in busy urban traffic, especially if you have plenty of overtakings or lanesplitters. Example: I drove all the way to Vietnam and the SCBS triggered every 10 seconds because of scooters cutting in. I got rear ended more than 5 times because of the sudden braking.

Questionable QC on the rear bushings and general suspension/power steering system. Early models (pre-2013-2015) has problems with leaky power steering and cracked control arms/bushings.

Overall, it's a great car, with small but annoying faults. It's not as fun to drive as the Jazz, for sure, but it makes up for it in its interior and fuel efficiency.

Thanks everyone for your inputs

I think the best thing to do is head out and test drive them

>tfw actually like the turbo models

Is that a custom paint job,or is that offered outside of the US? I like it a lot more than the stock US colors anyways.

I test drove a 2008 Fit and it was almost like driving around a Miata or something. Extremely light feeling, super responsive, nice and tight sporty driving dynamics. I was extremely impressed. Only reason I got a Civic instead was because it felt like I was going to die in the event of a car crash.

I sat in a 2016 one this year, and maybe it's just in my head, but I felt a lot safer in there. The interior room and even interior quality was kind of ridiculous. Kinda wish I got one now considering 90% of my driving is in city anyways.

Thoughts on the 500? Im looking at a 5 speed pop today with 17k for 10k, will be financing of course.

Avoid the Nissan Versa like the plague. The CVT transmissions generally need to be replaced before 30k.
The Fiesta's DCT automatic is also trouble-prone, but more reliable than Nissan's.
Honda has also had trouble with their CVT's. I'm waiting until they ditch them in favor of the new 8 speed DCT's Acura started using.
The Yaris/iA is perfectly reliable regardless of transmission. It's built by Mazda and uses a conventional torque converter 6 speed automatic.
The iM is a great car, provided you get it with the stick. Avoid that CVT automatic.

Oddly, you completely ignored one of the best cars in the class, the Chevrolet Sonic. No it is not a Daewoo. It was styled by Koreans, is built in America using a German chassis and German engines. The automatics are decently reliable and tha manuals are glorious. Just make sure you get the 1.4L Turbo. Everyone who has ever bought the 1.8L base model regrets not ponying up for the turbo.
Just remember the Sonic is not a Skateboard.

>Oddly, you completely ignored one of the best cars in the class, the Chevrolet Sonic

Oh, it was on my shortlist previously., But then I removed it prior to making this thread. That's because of the "Chevy" brand, and I wasn't a big fan of it's design.

It's a OEM paint color

Still one of the best cars in the class.

Have driven a 1.4T Sonic

It's fine, the gauge cluster is bed, the rear leg room isn't as good as the fit nor is the head room. In 1.4T/M6 trim it is a fun little car but the 1.8 cars are garbage

Honestly, if it comes down to me deciding between the cars on my shortlist (with the Sonic included), it being named "Chevy Sonic" would make me gravitate towards that one immensely.

Is Mazda CX-3 the only acceptable crossover around? Deliberating between this or Honda HR-V for my first car.

That doesn't look like any of the colors they offer on the US site. If that's how the yellow looks in person, that looks a lot fucking better than what they're advertising.

Why a crossover? Crossovers are completely pointless.

When you live in Singapore or any Asian countries as far as I know, this is the only type of car a wagecuck can realistically purchase because anything higher than 1.5L engine is taxed to kingdom come.

I need the extra ground clearance and second-row space. Was about to buy Mazda 2 Skyactiv but the second-row is horrifically cramped.
