I assume you're talking about the golf swing thing. yes, active sonar sends out a ping that reflects off objects in range and that reflected noise is in turn read as an irregularity that tells them something is there. you aren't charging anything up though, which is why the golf swing doesn't make a lot of sense. you should be able to calibrate the strength of the ping at your leisure, though being able to detect it based on it's strength is still a neat idea.
