Complete retard when it comes to rear-end shit, so looking for some advice.
My truck is absolute dogshit in the rain, even with brand new tires. Can't hardly pull out anywhere without spinning because of muh one-wheel drive.
I've been looking into installing a mini-spool because they are cheap, and easy to install, but from what ive been reading they eat tires.
My question is how badly do they do so, and am I just being a retard for wanting to install one in the first place.
I only drive 10~ miles a day, so not really a concern there.
Any input appreciated because 3dumb when it comes to that shit.
ALSO: How shit is 3.08 gearing, and would 3.73 be an upgrade worth doing? (parts truck has a 3.73 ratio rear end, so cost would be nothing basically.)
Truck is a 93 C1500, rear end code GU4, i THINK it's the GM 8.5, but as said prior, am retard with this shit.

GM's rears are all trash. I would suggest if your having that much issue upgrade to a more heavy duty axle first with a better rear break config for better pedal feel. Get away from that JB5 shit. Also I really love my 3.42's Great hiway gear and p good in city and slight towing of my 18' bass boat. 3.73's would be alittle more tow'y. Can't comment on mpg's as the only platform I have 3.73s in is a suburban and it automatically has 1,000lbs on these pickemups.

A locked rear is not going to help you in the rain. Pull out slower and buy tires with better wet traction next time
Carson Butler
If you think your car is shit in the rain with the 3.08 you're not even going to move off with a 3.73.
Try taking off in 2nd (or just take it slower in 1st) and get some actually decent tires.

Engaging the front axle will achieve better results.
Adrian Garcia
why do you say so? i had a locker and it was pretty nice in the rain. but it was noisy as fuck driving around town. makes a lot of clunking sounds
Jonathan Gonzalez
I don't think you understand how these diffs get when they get old. You litterly have a 1 wheeled powered vehicle.
Bentley Taylor
4wd actuator broke. Back to square 1 of old GM trucks with worn components.
Jaxson Bennett
Maybe I'm wrong. I've always heard lockers can be dangerous on slippery pavement.
I've driven a few different brands of all-terrains on some jeeps and they all slip a little in the rain if I give it too much gas
Evan Scott
that looks like suffering how hard to fix is the actuator?
Leo Gutierrez
>4wd actuator broke
Well perhaps its time to fix the real problem.
I have a twin stick 4wd and its does help considerably when launching in slippery rainy conditions.
Alexander King
Put some weight in your bed
Anthony Sanders
So? You had a 1 wheel powered vehicle when it was new. What's it getting old have to do with it?
Hell, most everyone on this board only has a 1 wheel powered vehicle. Most 4x4s are still 1 wheel powered, when you shift them into 4wd it's only a 2 wheel powered, unless you got lockers or posi in any of the diffs.
The problem is nowhere near bad enough that you need to put a fucking spool in the truck. The fix is learn how to drive in the rain. A spool will make your straightaway performance good, but the truck is going to handle like shit around corners all the time, ESPECIALLY when it's wet.

I know your 1wd pain bro, same tires which may be part of it honestly, even though they rate fairly well, my truck is a useless cunt in rain. Even leaving a light, barely giving it gas, I'll usually spin a tire a bit. Makes me miss driving my dads 3/4 ton, even on 8 year old worn out BFG all terrains, that thing drives like a dream in any weather in 2wd mode, plus, dat 4.11 factory rear end.
Jackson Peterson
spools are pretty crude and are a bit dangerous for turning corners in the rain because one tire will brake loose to allow the turn, and a little more throttle will have you tokyo drifting.
a limited slip would be ideal. idk how crappy your axle is but you may look for a whole new setup to drop in.
Christopher Hughes
but gm had thier own thing. search RPO code G80 in google.
Jaxon Cox
>i don't know how to modulate the throttle
Dominic Johnson
for some reason i dont remember the turn signals being in the bumper. did they only do that a couple years?
Levi Roberts
Pretty sure it was an 80-82 only option, or 81-82, they did a similar thing on the older trucks as well where a year or two span had something like that different than the others.
>Mines an 81
I wish I could make up my mind on switching it to a factory grill or leaving the tube grill in, was like that when I bought it.
Connor Ross
shit no wonder. thats clean for such an old truck
Ayden Rivera
Just weld the diff up and if you decide you don't like it, grab an LSD from the junk yard and throw it in there. You have nothing to lose.
Benjamin Barnes
Be aware that welded diffs make fur hektik skidz tho. Actually with a truck you might not wanna weld it, you might snap an axle with big tires. Just go get the LSD from the junk yard
