Because there's people who want them for the kind of car they are. Small, lightweight, quick around corners, rwd, tons of aftermarket, reliable, easy to work on, etc etc. Sure, they're expensive for being an 80s Corolla, but that just means that there are people who still want them, for whichever reason they might have.
The way I see it, it's not sane to buy one for the prices they have, but it's my guilty pleasure to sit in this loud car, enjoying it's bumpy ride and constant slight smell of gasoline, trailing the popups around twisty mountain roads. My closest alternative would be a Lotus Exige, but that's a pretty steep jump in expenses to get one. A couple of years down the road, I'll probably have both, if I can afford it.
