I DD a TDI Beetle. It's a 2003 GLS 5 speed. I think they make excellent daily drivers but the quality of the interior plastics is awful. That's my main bitch.

The 1.9 is pretty torquey and gets up to speed with great ease. I would have loved to look at other options but there was nary a diesel Saab or Volvo to be found. Wasn't interested in a diesel BMW.

Torque for a really small powerband feels fast to those who are too poor at driving to choose the correct gear to go fastest in, and for road driving, where you rarely have max acceleration for long periods. Drive a diesel at high revs on a track and you'll realise they don't have outright pace compared to an equivalent petrol engine.

Gearing is a thing, also it gets like 50mpg probably which is good for an engine that produces that ammount of torque. Not to mention diesel is cheaper and taxes are usually lower for diesels.

The block on that Golf is also a gas engine block for carbed and mechanical fuel injection versions, all of which worked very well. Most versatile block FTW.

Google says its towing capacity is 1000 kg or 2200 lbs with a braked trailer.
