Are classic muscle cars like 1960-70 expensive despite their condition? Could you get a beat up one that drives ok for cheap?
To Americans
no
Depends where you live and what your after.
Usually not, because boomers
This, it depends on what you're looking for
Typically tho they're expensive to buy but cheap to maintain.
Most true 'muscle cars' in that era are boomer priced.
However if you're looking something after 72 and up towards the malaise era, you might find something thats got roughly the same engine and style car, but with shitty heads, and alot cheaper to snatch up.
no, even rusted frames are stupid expensive because boomers 'know what theyve got'
no tire kickers either kiddo
Depends on the brand/model. A number matching mint specimen will cost you six figures or you could get a fully restored non number matching car for ~$30k. Of course you can find a barely running rusted out piece of shit for cheap if you look.
People tend to buy a car for $30k dump another $30k into it then try to sell it for $60k. After years of not selling they wind up letting it go for $30k.
My dad has a rebuilt 67 mustang, cost a shit ton to rebuild. You can have it for 80 grand
your pic is a 1970 camaro. 60 to 69 were different.
Sometimes you can find an old lady who wants to get rid of the car her husband had.
Often filled with animal shit and missing a wiring harness.
When it comes to classic American cars it doesn't even matter if it runs and drives. A 1960 ferd mastang that runs and drives would cost the same as a 1960 fed mastang that couldn't drive. It's all about the exterior body condition and how "original" the car is. If you've got all the same parts from the factory (even if they're broken parts) then your car is worth more.
Why is it like this? boomers.
>1960 Mustang
Congratulations, that's the joke.
So basically all the classics including the ones in bad condition are being bought by boomers who pay anything to restore them and now they're all expensive? When did this start happening? In movies the high school kids have beat up muscle cars but they've got high displacement V8s, looks fun and would be awesome
He said mastang, can you read?
Everyone on Veeky Forums blames any high price or difficulty locating a vehicle on boomers, so don't believe everything here. Also don't believe what you see in movies. I'm guessing the problem is people of any age not realizing that just because they put X amount of money into something, doesn't mean they're getting X back.
>When did this start happening? In movies the high school kids have beat up muscle cars
It used to be like this up until probably the mid-late 90's. That's when the first "cash for clunkers" style program was implemented where they accepted any old car and gave a rebate towards a new shitbox.
A lot of old cars either rusted to nothing, got crushed, or crashed by shitty drivers.
That plus super nostalgia from boomers are why they've inflated so much.
No 1960-70 muscle cars drive ok, they all drive like the wheel is about to fall off.
Realistically, most high school students drive what people who have jobs don't want. Only one kid I've met had a muscle car -- a buick skylark.
Instead of beat up muscle cars, it was beat up trucks -- I would also say that trucks keep too much of their value because of this, but oh well.
Motorcycles will always be fun death machines because most people are too scared of them (not that the boomer meme is limited to muscle cars).
every now and then you might find one, but by an large the ones worth while have been bought and restored or people think they are worth more than they are.
back in the late 80s very early 90s they were quite cheap, i had a 71 chevelle 396 (i'm old). I did exhaust, cam, carbs etc. It was inferior to the 300zxtt I had later, and slower than the mildly tuned saab I drive now. They are by and large not very good cars. Yes they can be restomodded, but you will spend near 100,000 to get it to outperform a 10k wrx. Its all nostalgia and rose colored glasses.
Not anymore, I purchased my 69 camaro for $11k back in 2007, had some rust in the floor pan that I fixed and came with a few extra parts. But now you cannot find anything around that budget that will run and isnt covered in cancer spots.

Boomers are idiots, the auction price for their jalopies have been stagnant for years. Only exotics and racing heritage cars appreciate at a decent rate compared to opportunity cost.
Right now, late 70's & 80's italian super cars are surging. In a few years, late 80's and early 90's super cars and rare sports cars will be the rage.
You are better off buying an unmodified Supra or a low mileage NSX than a fucking muscle car.

I had to virtually travel almost 300 miles before I found something that meets OP's requirements assuming he meant 60s only. Smothered 70s smogless coupes are more available but every other 60s car was either gone already (many instances of this) or at least $8000 for a poor example of an undesirable model.
This though... With love, this could become something very special.
I can't wait!

>I know what I got
Yes, we get it, Veeky Forums hates boomers. Repeating the same jokes over gets old pretty quickly.
It's $3000 and sounds negotiable. That's pretty reasonable for a historically significant, intact muscle car.
Depends on the car but usually no. You might be able to find an old Dodge Dart or 67 & earlier Chevy Nova or something for ~5K in okay condition but they're all rust buckets and need parts that no one has or makes anymore
But you can sometimes find 70's C3 Corvettes in okay condition so if you dont mind V8s making 200HP mated to 3 speed autos in need of some fiberglass work then go for it
>mfw
>That's pretty reasonable for a historically significant,
There is nothing significant about a base model car. It's a 290 with auto. If it was a 390 4speed, maybe could make some kind of argument
>Intact muscle car.
Needs panels welded in, rusted, engine and trans is out. God knows what else is missing
theyre all rusted pieces of shit
youll never get one that "drives ok". they didnt "drive ok" when they were new, they certainly dont today. unreliable garbage.
not worth the time or the money
What does that even mean
Isn't the aftermarket practically non existent for AMC's?
Well that used to be a aar cuda.
Op look for a 71 to 73 chevelle they stamped a fuck ton of those. And they are dirt cheap so long as there isn't a ss badge on it.
