Hold the button on the back of the ratchet to release the detent. If the ball still doesn't pop in then push down it with something while pulling the plastic piece away from the ratchet.

I really hate harbor freights packaging. I just pried mine off with a pocket knife. My ratchet didnt have a quick release.

There are plenty of tools made by snap on that do not have competitive pricing and offer only acceptable levela of quality, but their dual 80 ratchets are fucking GOAT and worth every penny.
