How do you sell a car on craigslist?

I've bought a car off of craigslist, but now I need to know how to sell one.

Specifically, how do you keep people from wasting your time? Should I use my phone number as a way of contacting or just an email?

And test drives; how do you keep people from joyriding or taking off with your car? Do you ask for collateral or something?

Any advise would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

>how do you keep people from joyriding or taking off with your car? Do you ask for collateral or something?

You ride with them in the passenger seat.

Some people ask some real stupid shit sometimes.

when i bought my car, the owner didn't come with me. I could have taken anything from it before giving it back

That's because he thought you looked trustworthy enough to not do that.

i beg to differ, i had a black hoodie on with my hood up.

but then again i was 18 at the time and he was like 2 years older than me

Cash in hand for test drives.

is it possible for people to give you fake cash and information, then just steal your car?

>not going with them on the test drive

i mean when they hand you the cash and sign the title and i hand over the keys

>inb4 check every bill's security features

>fake cash
Much less likely than fake cashiers check.

so pretty much the only acceptable payment method is cash?

I would be okay with it if a person drove us both to their bank and got a cashier check their but otherwise I'd day cash only. Unless I'm selling the car for 10k+ dollars

>sell a car on craig
You gotta mentally prepare yourself to be the biggest asshole you can be, or you're gonna get eaten alive.

so what would be the best contact method to use so that I don't get spammed, but at the same time being convenient to potential buyers?

sign up for google voice, pick a local area code and use the google voice app to forward calls and texts to your real phone. prevents spammers.
take good pictures, be detailed in your listing. I cannot stress enough how fast and easy it is to sell a car in a busy craigslist area if you clean it up very well and take bright, good pictures. daylight is your friend.
keep the listing fair. don't list your desired price, go over 1000-or maybe 1500 and be prepared to bargain down.
Don't be an ass, and be prepared for a little time-wasting, but make them come to you. Most police departments offer a "safe trade" place in their parking lot where it's well lit. Use that, do not use your home.
Don't accept anything but the full cash price, obviously. have a bill of sale ready and know your paperwork. a lot of states offer a website where you can report the sale of your car. use it IMMEDIATELY.

Phone only to screen out the nigs

google voice. they won't even know you're using it, it's just a regular phone number

email

>Post it.
>Sit back.
>Relax.
>Prepare for the retarded questions.

Great. I do plan on being thorough with my listing. So hopefully it'll answer any questions people will have.

Does anyone know how to say "I don't speak Spanish" in Spanish? Because I guarantee I'll get a lot of them since I live in SoCal

No habla espanol

but im a guy so wouldn't it be "No hablo en enspanol"? and then add "hablen en ingles por favor" for courtesy?

They will ask you stuff that's thoroughly explained in the listing. There is nothing you can do.

>They will ask you stuff that's thoroughly explained in the listing.
Then they'll show up and complain about it.

Here's what I do,

All commucation through text but at least one phonecall before meeting them

tell the truth, dont try to hide anything wrong with the car

always post for at least $1,500 than you want for the car, people expect to be able to haggle

Meet in a public place, never at your house. places with cameras in the parking lot are best

This may not apply to everyone, but I always bring a gun with me (ccw state)

Always ride along for test drives, also helps since you can answer any specific questions they have along the way

Cash only, no exceptions

Don't leave the title in the car, put it in your pocket where it can't be snatched

Always get the car detailed and washed before selling

Repair as many things to the car as you possibly can before selling

Lastly, be as nice and polit as possible but also firm. don't let the buyer walk all over you. you do not HAVE to sell them the car

$1,500 more*

As long as you're not black it's fine

the car is only a honda del sol and we're trying to get at least 2000 for it. I think I'm going to list it at 2500/2600

If someone wants a test drive you have to ride along and also take a photo of their DL.

No "en" Just "No hablo espaƱol". Don't worry about courtesy if you already stated you don't speak Spanish.

Sounds kinda low for a Del Sol if you're in a decent area, IMO...

hmm... other del sols in the area are running like 3000 plus. but my current competition is this one

ventura.craigslist.org/cto/5749776859.html

mine is a 93' S, but is in extremely good mechanical condition and the interior is almost pristine with somewhat newly reupholstered leather seats almost worth 2000 themselves (insurance cost because the original seats were stolen).

It's just that it was involved in a front end accident (fixed (out of pocket so it still has a clean title)) and now has a black hood with a couple of small gashes in the front bumper (the car is white). But the spoiler has been replaced with a black oem one and the wheels are black so it sort of matches.

other than that the car runs really smooth/shifts smooth

and also it's automatic

I've had good luck ONLY listing email. It will drive away some real buyers (old people) but otherwise it let's you screen who to respond to and who will be retarded.
