the real strengths of the series were absolutely the characters and the setting, racing was just a narrative device to explore those two things. it's why the racer of the week stuff in project d lost so much of the charm of the earlier parts

Well, it depends on the intake / exhaust / internal mods / and tune. It also depends on engine speed, gear selected, and throttle usage (including an accelerating or decelerating throttle input; makes different sounds). Also, the habits of the driver can make a car sound quite different from another driver in the same car.
