We're poor as fuark but because we actually build all out own shit and don't subcontract the actual construction like other schools we manage with a budget and team size that is like 1/10th the size of all the large universities that compete.

We have them, just not the $80k+ that schools like Michigan and RIT have. We're a tiny school in the middle of nowhere, and most of our sponsorships are local.

I'm the embedded systems lead for a first year electric team. Shit is pretty dope. Sponsorships have been nil so far but we're changing our approach on the advice of a Clemson lead we know. Here lately we've been giving presentations at the local Borg Warner facility to get better at it.
Read that regulations book and make love to it. If you fuck up one thing, you're out. I was going to join my university's SAE club but I'm enrolled in 17 credits. No time.

Also, to the other Formula people here: what do your embedded systems look like? Assuming you're mostly gas teams, do you run off the shelf stuff or roll your own ECU's and shit? We've designed a fairly extensible data acquisition system with the intention that data from a "first year car" is more useful than the race results. We're planning on doing traction control, launch control, torque vectoring (which currently works on the test vehicle). Have you had any troubles with similar systems? We're running dual motors which makes things a bit easier, but everyone we've talked to so far makes it out like what we want to implement is impossible.
Also, what are your data logging systems like?
