What car has the best stock shifter?

What car has the best stock shifter?

brz and wrx feel pretty nice

my focus when stock had a ton of slop.

S2000

Focus shifter is pretty good, it's very easy to work and feels tight.

S2000

You sure in the WRX bud? I heard its like a bucket full of rocks

Sw20

the 2016 wrx i drove was fairly nice. although it's possible it had the sti short shift

Any pre-2005 Honda
E9x M3
Any Scooby WRX
RX7
Any Cayman
Any Miata

S2000
and 911s

I'd cross out the WRX from that list. STi is a bit nicer though.

This, I drove the Cayman GT4 and boy was it awesome af.

For me most enjoyable were caymans and r8.
>you'll never have staged shifter in mainstream shitbox

this

>Any Miata
depends. mine is ok but unremarkable

Are new Honda shifters not good?

F50

This is what it feels like
>chik
>CLUNK
It's like closing a perfectly adjusted car door with a lever

I agree with S2000 but 911?

They're ok but I never particularly liked them

I generally hate European cars, but VAG has some clean-shifting transmissions. I've driven mostly American or Japanese manuals (trucks, 4wds, ponys, rice coupes) and the Audi / VW 6-speeds* have felt the smoothest to me, with hondas as a close second. I would never buy a VW or Audi though.

I had an '06 STi for 6 years and the shifting was "crunchy" if you weren't used to the car, the clutch was also very heavy with a small grab zone. These things can indicate better transmission strength, and probably do on a high-torque AWD car (2WDs can spin their wheels if given too much power, triple-LSD-equipped AWD cars generally stress the transmission, differentials, and clutch since it's harder to spin the tires. It certainly didn't feel 'comfy' to shift though.

* I have driven: '05 S4, TT 225, 5-cyl new beetle, Golf GTI VR6.

Pic somewhat related, my first car, taken october '07. It's shift feel was decent.

Not really, no. I miss the SNIKT shifters that Hondas of old had.

they're called gated shifters

These are based off my experiences as a mechanic road testing cars. Generally 100k+ and never replaced bushings.

FD RX7

Short, the right mix of ratchety and smooth, and in the perfect spot

>pre-2005 honda

Could not agree more on that. I really don't know what they did after.

You have the opposite taste of the general consensus. Honda is widely considered to have god tier manuals, and BMW ones to be shitty.

Nobody likes Nissan/Mitsu manuals though.

Was thinking of something else while typing and made mistake.

>I heard its like a bucket full of rocks
That's the most apt description I've heard for it.

My old MR2 Spyder had the best shifter out of any car I've ever driven. If it was just slightly shorter it would be completely perfect

This one

...

Nissan is shit, I can verify that. I have an old BMW and the 5sp box is orgasmic when you rev match and slide it in correctly.

Also, since when is Honda "widely considered" to be good, I thought the only people that liked them were faggots who drive a riced civic and are royally butthurt about not getting another car.

Maybe you shouldn't listen to your fat redneck friends then

Well then I guess you thought wrong.

nah dude. my dad's got a 1985 911 and it's not really about the shifter feel it's about the feel when it shifts. it's fucking magic

I agree with this, BRZ and new WRX shifter is max comfy

...

F23 Getrag

I'm glad auto shifters are becoming their own style. Stalk shifters are good for vans and trucks, these kinds of shifters are good for cars.

>that hideous yellow pattern with green frame
>wheel is on wrong side of the car
>they forgot the shift boot
>no cupholders
somebody is getting fired for that

...

It's really a preference thing. I really like the shifter on my 07 Civic Si because "responsive" I guess is the best word for it. You can feel it knotch into gear but it's not clunky at all, and it makes the drive feel more rewarding than say a Focus ST, which I thought felt like a toy almost given how easy and smooth it is to just throw the shifter around.

Also not sure why people keep mentioning the WRX, my brother has a 2015 with the STi short throw I believe, and it feels very disappointing...

The VA1 WRX's 6 speed is just the old 5-speed with a 6th gear tacked on. The Subaru 5-speed was never great.

The 6 speed in the actual WRX STi is a unique unit only for that car, and feels much better. It can hold good power too.

looks like an atari controller

996/986 shifters

you can feel the universe

>Feel the universe
>looks like an anal probe

so that's what the aliens are using.

>i want auto shifters to look like manual shifters
kys

When the BRZ behaves its a sweetheart.

Cars I've driven in stick

>Lancer GTS
6/10 breddy smooth

>AW11
7//10 feels chunky

>Fiesta ST
7/10 smooth but 1-to-2 is weird

>S2000
10/10 like a rifle bolt

>BMW 328i E92
4/10 bizarrely cheap feeling?

>Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V
4/10 meh

>RX-8
8/10

>Escort ZX2 SR
6/10 not bad actually, factory short shifter

>VW Rabbit
3/10 just did not like

Oh and Saab 9-3 Viggen is a 3/10

Shifts are rubbery and loooooong

F-150 I learned on was a 2/10 but it had 200k on original clutch

>reverse on the left

That gated shifter is gorgeous. But I feel like things like coins and tendies wrappers would fall in there
