so i'm playing through witcher 2 before starting up 3

at the point where i have to decide between the elf dude and roche, is one path better than the other or is it just personal preference? i'd like to start 3 as soon as I finish 2 so I probably won't play through them both

Usually NPCs who follow you can't die but there are like 4 or 5 sidequests where you have to protect someone and then you see their healfbars.

Followed the bastard all the way to his camp, had to fight his friends, killed them, took the medicine and sent him on his way because Geralt is like that.

It's even more sad because it is very possible he is still alive 100 years after the books, so he most likely saw the death of Ciri and Dandelion and the rest of his friends as well, the White Wolf has had a hard life, pun intended and not intended.

Roche's path makes the most sense for Geralt to go on and it is the path that matters for Witcher 3, but Iorveth's path was the better path in terms of quality of quests.

W2 is very linear and it fucked up the alchemy and monster hunting in favor of muh politics. Its main strengths are the story and choice and consequence, but the whole cinematic approach was obnoxious as fuck and took a while to get used to. Also W1 has a superior soundtrack and better atmosphere.

I've played W2 6 times and chose Roche's path only once, just to see the story. Iorveth's path is simply better in every aspect.

Witcher 1s first two acts is just pure awful in terms of quests. The fetch questing just ruined it completely. Throw in the combat system that is completely devoid of any thought or strategic planning (even on the hardest difficulty) and the gameplay is just shit.

Writing is "meh" for the most part, voice acting is laughably bad but it's an old game.

Witcher 2 just surpasses it in most areas that count. Calling Witcher 2 linear when it has possibly the biggest choice out of any RPG I can genuinely think off, a choice so large that you need to complete the game twice to get the full story and I just fail to see your argument.

If you can't see it and think it's a mediocre game without merit then I can't make you think otherwise.

Iorveth's path answers more questions and actually has more stuff relevant to TW3 (like explaining Philippa's... situation and what's up with Radovid)

Who would canon Geralt choose? Iorveth or Roche?

At first I thought Roche would be the clear choice (Iorveth has virtually zero character building with Geralt leading up to the choice and he comes across as some mad lunatic terrorist) but the more I think about it, the more I think Geralt would choose Iorveth because of these reasons:

>Roche is too blind sighted by his loyalty to Temeria. This is evident when he fucks up the entire plan Geralt had set up to catch Letho
>Roche refused to leave Flotsam whereas Iorveth would be leaving immediately. Geralt would likely go with Iorveth to track down Triss/Letho before their trails grew cold (obviously no hindsight is involved).

Now i'm not saying Iorveth > Roche and I do think Elves are all sub human shitters but i'm just saying I think canon Geralt would choose Iorveth.

I still haven't played Witcher 1 or 2

Yeah, Roche had already fucked up the best plan they had and now he was going to sit around while the only lead was heading away. People always bring up how Roche saved Geralt's life so Geralt should feel indebted to him, but canon Geralt was always a bit of a prick, he wouldn't necessarily return the favor if it meant letting his own goals slip by him (similar to how he told Regis to fuck off after he saved his and Dandelion's lives etc).

Well, if there's any Rochefags out there who spared Letho then they're technically still betraying Roche because Geralt promised him that he would kill/capture the Kingslayer
