but sm64 IS a good speedrun by every relevant metric:
-inputs/minute ratio (a higher ratio of useful inputs required per minute means a higher level of skill is involved in actually executing the run)
-variety of inputs (it's obviously more difficult to grasp the variety of techniques neccesary to speedrun sm64 than it is to simply start menuing like in some rpg)
-length of the run (at more than an hour it requires skill, consistency and proficiency in knowing the game's route and the necessary array of techniques to be able to run the game efficiently)
-competitiveness (the game remains relevant in speedrunning and having asian and western runners means that the run is always getting improved closer to optimization)
-rng has little effect on the runs (thus they're not dependant on drops or anything, and essentially boil down to the runners' ability and knowledge of the game)
-entertaining run with high replay value (so it doesn't become a chore to review and analyze your runs filled with pointless menuing)
-3d game (the extra dimension massively increases the possibilities of movement as well as the possibilities of breaking the game for massive time saves)
-little intereference of cutscenes (self-explanatory really, no one wants to sit through a sub-standard pseudo-movie when they're speedrunning)

Honestly, have any of you ever even speedran Super Mario 64 120 Star N64? I mean if you did you would realize just how great it is and that when people say it's the best speed game there's a reason they're saying it. Just the pure amount of execution needed to pull of all the tricks is just insane! The feeling of just pulling off a nice slick canonless makes you feel all gooey and warm inside. It's a feeling like no other!

Yeah, it's actually insane how much downtime there is in SM64 compared to similarly lengthed runs. Those star cutscenes and star spawns add up to like 20 minutes.
