The original fell casualty to deleting my old Veeky Forums folder, but I had some WAT automotive technology schematic for a jet-turbo system. You have essentially two turbos all linked together by one shaft. The first turbine is driven by the engine's exhaust, is used for starting the rest of the jet system. Once the jet system is running and the shaft is spinning faster than exhaust can turn it, a clutch (centripetal, computer controlled, whatever) disengages to let the engine exhaust turbine spin freely. The jet now runs as a jet would, but the shaft also drives a compressor to feed air to the engine. This might actually be doable, though linking up essentially two turbos and installing a clutch system in one is a little beyond garage fabrication.
