Because they're there to tell you at a glance that someone isn't the base class. Guardians are arrowheads because they got a bow and Dragonhunter, their elite spec, is about being a dickass monsterhunter with bows and traps. Rangers are a moon because the Druid gave them "celestial avatar", a sort of pseudo-deathshroud that gives them huge heals they can spread around. Engineers have a hammer icon as the Scrapper because that spec gave them a literal hammer.

It really, really isn't hard if you know anything about the class and that's why the icon is there - so you know they're not a base guardian, druid, or engineer and that's why one asshole has a spirit bow, the other one just turned into stars, and the last guy is followed by a fleet of gyrocopters.

MMO generals in particular are bad, because you get the kind of attention whoring you see here.
