>True route is even more bullshit cheese, to the point that it's just unfun and plain obnoxious

Is there any particular reason Marvelous can never balance things? It always ends up being way too easy or too hard for all the wrong reasons (inflated HP/damage, invulnerable to stuns/combos, bullshit like hitting you during dodge animation, etc).

That's the thing though. VD is actually nicely built with a pretty good combo system (instead of it being pointless like in SK). The issue comes from the fact that instead of making the enemies more intelligent or so on, the later routes/levels just slap on more HP/damage and call it a day. The second to last boss on the Chaos route for example will fully ignore any sort of hits you throw, even supers. The only way to make them shut the fuck up is to dash > ground pound > dash > ground pound > repeat indefinitely until they die. Anything else (legit combos, supers, etc) will be completely ignored and they mow right through it to hit you.

How are characters going to be distinct gameplay-wise from each other in public broadcast service?

It's simple:

>wombo combo as usual
>end your combos with some variety of knockdown or punt into the air
>do a dash (hold X) to engage Phantom Mode
>Square x3 for Phantom Dance
>Tap/mash Circle for Phantom Strike
>Hold Circle for Phantom Blast
>Hold Triangle for Phantom Fall
>You CAN chain all this together to get a fucking massive boost by engaging Phantom Mode immediately after finishing, AKA do Phantom Dance > Phantom Mode > repeat
>what can and can't be chained together depends on the character you're playing as
