Well, the main thing is that I don't think it's really accurate (or at least, it's missing some information) to say that White Mages "swapped to AST for farming".

The implication there is what WHM is the stronger of the two for progression, and AST only becomes better for farming, and I just don't think that's the case. I think that AST is markedly better for both, and the reason that WHM has seen a lot of early use in progression has more to do with comfort and familiarity than actual effectiveness - remember that AST was so marginalized in Midas that a lot of healers just didn't even bother to really learn to play it, and I think a lot of them decided that getting through progression with a suboptimal-but-familiar composition was probably going to be easier than doing it with an optimal-but-unfamiliar one.

That specific point aside though, you're not wrong. WHM is not, in absolute terms, any worse now than it was in 3.3, and all of the healing advantages it held over AST in the last tier are still present and are still just as potent.

It's mostly a semantic difference: One viewpoint is that you should look at the class design and balance in a vacuum, and consider how they would stack up if you went back and did ALL the content in the game, at an appropriate iLevel. The other viewpoint is that only class performance in the current content matters, because nothing else offers you any advancement/progression, and everything else is outleveled or outgeared so heavily that "How would Class X and Class Y compare if we went in there at the minimum iLevel?" is kind of an irrelevant question.

You can make a case for either viewpoint and you wouldn't be wrong, because "WHM still stacks up just fine against AST (if you imagine taking each of those classes into each raid tier at the starting iLevel" and "AST shits all over WHM (in the current tier of content)" are both true. You just can't sit there and call someone wrong because they take the other view.
