I will admit, I love how much room the Fiesta does have for its size. More than the full size 3/4 ton truck.

My itty bitty CRX is plenty useful.

My Focus has plenty of interior space, a high ceiling, legroom for days in the front seats, cargo space for more than it can move if you fold the back seats down, and tie-down points in the back and on the back seats.
And 'smooth ride' is a consequence of suspension design rather than sheer size. Even my Focus has independent suspension on all four wheels.
A smaller car is cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, cheaper to own, easier to park, accelerates faster, stops quicker, corners better and faster, and is safer in a crash for everyone involved.

Because we don't piss space. Large cars turn our parking lots into a shitfest and our garages, too. And there are many streets in town that don't explicitly fit two cars between the parked cars on the curb, and with a large car you'll always have to stop and wait for opposite traffic.

A great example is the Hummer H1.

It's not accurate to compare such bitching between older cars and newer cars due to safety design bloat eating up both space and visibility. Certainly the most obvious complaint in past years is the visibility loss. But cars are more safe than ever unless it is a chinese car.

That's why the US DOT made rear view camera mandatory in future cars. As with many decisions, there is a phase-in period for manufacturers to comply so you see manufacturers selling that as a premium feature for now. But eventually all the cars will have it.

Until then, all the low visibility cars keep on "love tapping" when they parallel park.

A lot of USA people never practiced learning where the edges of their care are. You park properly because you know where the unseen edges are. In the USA, it would be though unsightly to do what the japanese have done for drivers that don't know where the edges are (little antenna-like poles on the fender).

I'm 6'1" and fit in my spyder well enough, seat could be a little lower, but otherwise there's enough leg room to keep me happy.

Storage wise, the compartments are more than adequate for most things, they are just less convenient than having a back seat or boot, because you have to push the seats forward to access it, and then push them all the way back afterwards.
