V8
High-revving NA V12s are the GOAT
Straight pipes.
not being made of plastic, not being direct injection, lumpy cams
Peripheral ports.
agreed.
I think there are lots of engines sounding better than meme doritos.
1. Firing order
2. Exhaust design
That's it.
NA with blow off valve
>v distribution

Being under full load makes anything sound better than reving it in neutral
Most v8s , especially old ones.
I hate the modern whiny noise engines make
it just whirs a lot. i perfer a low sounding bubbly sound engine line idle brupbrupbrbruipbrupbrupbrb
what about amg mercs?
like this? i like
equal length headers/flatplane cranks
induction sound
proper exhaust with tone and not just loudness
really its all about the sound frequencies being right aka not sounding like a barely running tractor aka American v8s
>> n/a
Wastegate chatter, supercharger whine and BOV noise can all sound good. Just because a turbo muffles an engine a bit, doesn't mean it's a bad thing: a completely unmuffled racing engine will just make your ears bleed.
>> v distribution
Flat > V in terms of noise (except 4cyl)
>> high rev limit
Well duh.
>> carburettors
Multicarb setup > ITB fuel injection >>>> single 4 barrel carb > single throttle fuel injection
Actually, the best sounding engine is one you can drive without getting pulled over, or without getting hearing loss. Fuck straight pipes.
>I hate the modern whiny noise engines make
On most accounts I'd agree, but cam gear whine can be sexy as fuck.
>flatplane cranks
Only sound good at high RPM, sound really underwhelming at low RPM (unlike crossplane units)
VR6 engines
I am not very fond of forced induction engines sound. Some of them sound good though, but not on the top of my list.
I simply don't agree in the flat thing, except maybe for boxers in 4 cyl.
Examples:
flat 12 sounding good:

v12 destroying souls:

Maybe its the rev limit, but that sound is GOAT
About injection, carbs, etc:
I am thinking in old italian carburetted engines, which iirc are multicarb'd, at least most of them.
this
i like 5 cylinders, sounds like demons breaking through from another dimension when they take off

That quattro is godly. Love me some classic rally cars

OK kids.
What makes an engine sound good is the camshaft.
Duration/overlap.
Put a header and a flow master on an escort, and it still sounds like an escort.
Put a .540 lift/290° duration cam in an escort and even with stock exhaust it will sound like a NASCAR.
>displacement for throat
>compression for snappy throttle
>radical cam for that loping idle.
Angry bees seems to be a proud F1 tradition.
German engineering
how does that sound good? It is in luxobarges
>displacement
I wouldn't be able to tell this 3.5L apart from a 7L.
should have said volume I guess.
What's the difference?
Four Doritos are better than none
nothing I'm just reiterating what I meant. its really the combination of everything for that V-8 sound.
N/A 20v 4AGE Blacktop/Slivertop with open ITBs.
The cheapest engine that sounds absolutely amazing.
lumpy cam and good compression
at least 11:1
low compression engines sound like shit
especially in trucks
low rpm crossplane sounds horrible
like its running rough
A worn out low comp big block in a dump truck sounds 9000x better 99% of high comp Honda engines.
Are s600 engines flatplane
I'm all about strung out and raspy inline 4s
