Bizarrely enough my favourite card game was a singleplayer only dungeon crawler with card game strategy as the combat.
its art was literal ms paint tier and music was ripped off composers. but mechanics was solid and felt like an old school experience.

There's also VS, which publishes weekly statistical reports on the state of the game. These are pretty much the only stats we have to work with, so we all refer to them. They also post some of the top current and rising decklists for that week.

Then there's Twitch, you can often see some of the best players and deckbuilders in the world working on refining their lists. Forget the big 10,000-viewer celebrities, most of them suck cocks at the game.
People to look for off the top of my head: Purple, Rage, VLPS, Ant, Gaara, Xixo.
These guys typically build and play new top-tier decks, you'll see their names on lists and pros crediting them all the time.
There's also people who are considered the specialists/experts for certain decks or classes (eg Laughing for freeze mage, Zetalot for priest).
One of the benefits of HS is that you can just go on and talk to them directly, ask questions, debate tech choices, etc.

At the end of the day though, your biggest tool is the ladder. Trial and error.

I play commander/draft with some friends and the cool thing about it is that we don't want to be tryhard fucks, we just want to have a good time and if anyones feels someone is doing bullshit we just talk it out and people don't get hard feelings over it

i dunno, it seems like the majority of shadowverse's art is much more polished than hearthstone's. i bet that a professional artist would admit that it's more complex to replicate sv's designs over hs's. in that sense, generic is a term that fits hearthstone more.

Malydruid, with proper tech (ie geddon, harrisson/ooze, etc)
Control warrior (all major variants), same.
Tempo mage (48% against half the field because lol RNG)

Disco zoo does much better than you might think, it's only down by 48/52 or so. Make sure to pack an alchemist. Some people even run a priestess.
Face secret hunter is slightly favored and good overall.
Both of these are your best choices for climbing high ranks imho.

Good control priests work (and dragon to lesser extent), but they lose hard to almost everything else and you can just concede to rogue.
Plus they require playing priest.

Non-meme control shaman decks (ie nzoth, dragon, and classic) are heavily favored, but they literally auto-lose to combo decks (no tank up so RIP your face) and many struggle against priest.
On the upside they shit all over aggro.
Handlock and renolock are also somewhat favored, but also get boned by combo and can struggle against aggro. They beat the hell out of priest, though.
I've heard dragon mage can hang with the control boys too, though i haven't tried it myself.

I've also heard of people having success with new specialized ramp and c'thun druid lists, but i can't confirm that myself either.

Freeze and aggro freeze are obviously as favored as always, but don't fight cancer with AIDS.

Do any of these say anything about deck types?

Konami every 3 years follows the same formula:

>Game is boring and stagnant as fuck
>Their current anime at the time must be ending (we had 5 different series one after another)
>To revitalize it create a NEW game mechanic
>First was synchro, then xyz, now pendulum
>Use new anime to shill the fuck out of the new mechanic
>Kill with the banlist any deck using old mechanics and force people to buy into the new shit
>Only decks allowed to top are the ones that shill new cards, decks that none saw coming are killed fast as fuck

The most violent "transition" was from Synchro to xyz, since Konami downright killed 5 decks in a single banlist and banned all the playable single staples just to shill xyz, about 80% of my friends quit during the time because they literally lost all their decks.
Then people started to expect it and sold their decks around the time of the banlist.
Then Konami said OK NO MORE PUBLIC RELEASE DATE FOR THE BANLIST FUCKERS, and we don't fucking know when things are going to get killed.

I liked the light one.

Konami tried hard to create other formats, people just don't care.
