If you get a low rank (like copper) in ranked, will you get matched up with other low ranking players in casual?

I dont think the ranked and casual mmr have anything to do with each other.
That being said, in both modes the mmr seems to heavily rise when you queue with others from my experience.

Your best bet for operators on offence is to get Montagne, the big French GIGN shield guy

For Defense, get Tachanka with the turret or get Castle

I want to get back into this game, but I was always bad at it, and I've almost completely forgotten the maps and whatnot...

I played during a previous free weekend, wasn't Tachanka terrible? Or did they buff him?

I most used Rook on defense since you couldn't go wrong with him, and on offense I just used Fuse with an LMG, but this time I think I'm gonna try using Monatgue and Blitz with shields.

Tachanka is still the worst operator in the game, but he is likely getting buffed on the 17th when the new update hits. Castle is very hard to use effectively, he is often detrimental to the team when his barricades block entry of your team to get back inside the objective.

Montagne is still a decent pick. There are less nitro cells around and his shield extends/distends very quickly now. I play him more than Blitz, which as you've heard has horrible hitboxes to the point where you can be headshot by shooting above the shield.
