I just beat the game on classic a couple times then I play casual on subsequent playthroughs so I don't have to reset every time an accident happens.

Which game and chapter are you having most trouble with?

And as for getting good, try to calculate how much damage and hitrate nearby enemy units will deal to any units you put within range of them and how well your units will fare against them in counter attacks. Always check for weapons the enemies have that can possibly exploit any weaknesses your units have, like beastkillers against your cavaliers. Also check for enemy skills as well and know what they can do (especially for lunge, seal skills, blow skills, counter, countermagic, beastbane, and chance based activations skills like luna)

It's hard to give specific advice without knowing which faction you're playing, but my strategy has been to lure enemies with a tanky unit in defensive mode with someone else to reduce damage taken, then swarm with attack stance guys in order of range -> melee -> range -> melee or the inverse if it's an archer. There are exceptions like the counter archers in Conquest but overall it works pretty well if it's just killing enemies that's hard.

The counter archers are easily dealt with by using Xander with Siegfried, Corrin with a Kodachi, or Effie with a Javelin. And maybe Leo if he's tanky enough and doesn't get doubled.

And also you should still beware of seal skills and anyone with lunge while using that strategy.

They are exceptions, not the rule. Archers are rarely good and Shin is only worthwhile on HM

depends on their defense. otherwise they would be physical mages, no? FE2 archers are the best

I think Ninjas, and Butlers/Maids already fulfill that role, although they play as more as an anti mage, and support unit as their weapons don't have as much might as bows/yumis, while archers fulfill pure physical damage focused ranged attacks with anti flying abilities.

Chapter 2 gives you 5. Chapter 3 gives you three. Chapter 4 gives you 1.
Chapter 5 gives you 5 again.
Chapter 6 gives you another one.
So that's 22 units. You need 14 or less alive by the end of 6 to get Athena.
So that means 8 people have to die by then.

The game is built around taking losses. Units are disposable fodder with no supports, Malledus tells you in the prologue that you need to accept that your men will die, and then it forces you to sacrifice a unit.
