There are people who feel mental pain from having a specific limb (arm, leg, whatever). It causes them so much stress for all their life, that they essentially give in and cut it off and while they're now physically impaired at least the mental pain has stopped and they can enjoy life.
Now imagine this becomes a trend and people who don't have this mental pain start cutting off their arms, because they feel it looks nicer.
