honeypot lans are defined as lans that are actually more rewarding to lose. Winning a lan has the follow things, prize pool money, and having enemy teams study and understand you. If you win a lan with a very small prizepool you can blow your chances at winning a big lan. Thus these small prizepool lans are honeypots (traps) for other teams to destroy the winner

Honeypot hero is a similar idea. A team continues to pick a hero because of several reasons, even if they win or lose with it they manage to accomplish stuff. So teams become afraid of the hero and instead of banning an OP hero they ban the hero thus falling for the teams honeypot allowing them to draft the real combo.
