As far as I can tell, the Abbasids began falling apart after a million revolts while the Byzantines got super lucky in inheritance and holy wars. The Emperor mended the schism and formed the RE, but later died along with most of his immediate family in a plague, leaving only his daughter alive to inherit, who was betrothed to a Karling in a regular marriage. So now the Karlings are in control and the empire is catholic.
