I ran into that problem sometimes but I solved it pretty efficiently by just taking Atomy out of my deck and liquefying it.

Turn 4 Atomy when going first is the dream, turn 3 when going second, turn 5 means DoD is live.

The mechanic itself is closer, but what the gameplan itself isn't.
Forest does small combos to gain board control or do face damage to finish the game.
Dshift tries to set up an OTK.
I agree that the deck would be more fun if you could properly interact with your opponent's spells.

I think it's less that people think instants are bad game design and more of a desire to streamline gameplay, especially since it's a mobile game.

There are mobile CCGs that use instants and they work fine.
The reason they don't have instants is because some people feel like their turn is their turn and the opponent shouldn't be able to interfere with what they do.

Not really no. A zero PP 8/8 that blows up your entire board is pretty shit desu. It's okay if you destroy ghosts or something but that's so situational that you'd rather have anything else 90% of the time because your big cards get removed by effects anyway.
